Error while executing web part: System.NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.

Question

I keep getting this error message when I modify a list in SharePoint Designer 2010.  I'm trying to modify a column and apply some conditional formatting.  each time i do this, it looks fine in SPD, so I save and close.  When I save and close I get the correlation ID errorm message. The other interesting thing is that this basically makes the view i'm working from unuseable. I'm also unable to make other basic changes in SPD to lists as I get the same problem.I looked up the log in ULS Viewer and it gave me the following:

Can someone else help me determine what Might be going on?

Same issue here,

I noticed that after some windows updates do this.

When i try to customize Xsl tag of the XsltListViewWebPart i get this error :

I Figured out ... the Windows KB2844286 is causing this in my case..

I uninstalled this update and everything go back to work again.

I wait microsoft pronunce about that.

This solution worked.

Screwed us up too.  That sucks.  Now we had to hide the update and come back to it later when/if Microsoft ever decides to get around to retracting, re-releasing the update - or unhide and allow it to roll in followed up by some followup fix for what this breaks.

Hi SharePoint Architect. 

I unistalled this update and I still receive the same error.  Then I went to a machine without this update, and it gave me the same correlation id error message. Glad this resolved some of the issues for you and other users, but I'm still at a loss as to why SPD is being so problematic!

Let see if I understand, you mentioning SPD, i suposed that you refer to client machine right ?

I refer the KB is causing problems on the server machine on the SharePoint Front end server.

In my case, the page with webparts show perfectly on the design mode on SPD, but when i open the page on the browser the webpart stops to work and the correlation appears.

I cannot believe this! Customers were calling me this morning 'every library is down, etc etc'. Google drove me to this place and indeed, uninstalling the update + rebooting the server did the trick. Thanks!

According to this, it looks like:

KB2844286 is for Windows Server 2008 R2

KB2844287 is for Windows Server 2008

And uninstalling worked for us only after we rebooted the server as well.

I uninstalled this Update ...44286 on our Windows Server 2008 R2 as well as my client machine.  I rebooted both and much to my dismay, am still receiving the error when attempting to modify a list view in SPD 2010.  The conditional formatting I'm applying looks great in Design view, but when I go to save it and view it in the browser, I get the message I've attached in a previous post.  I'm thinking that this is not a windows update problem for me....

We also have this problem.

The update was uninstalled but automatically installed again after an overnight reboot! Grrrrrrr!

I have now uninstalled again and will "hide" the update so that it doesn't reinstall on the next reboot.

Will report back about whether it worked or not.

Have Microsoft acknowledged that this patch has a problem yet?  I'm a bit wary about leaving it unpatched, but can't afford to have Sharepoint broken!

OK got this to finally work!  Thanks everyone.  The important thing we needed to do was to "Hide" the update.  Just uninstalling it from server didn't work.

I am running into the exact issue.

I have uninstalled the KB and rebooted, but I still get the error in the browser.

In SPD it looks OK in design mode.

We had the same issue: Server 2008R2 SharePoint 2010 14.0.6131.5003.  Uninstalling the update from all our front-ends and rebooting solved the issue.

Uninstalled and hid the patch and everything is working again.

This is fine as a short-term solution, but obviously this isn't a viable longer term solution.  Any word on a Microsoft fix or even an acknowledgement of the problem?

As some of have discovered we released a fix for the Sharpoint Webpart issue. In contrary to the restart information in the kb-2872441, the hotfix does need a system restart.

I had the same problem, installed the hotfix and restarted IIS. Problem not solved. After inspecting the patch in Windows Update it was still pending.

While this Error was caused by KB2844286, we installed the hotfix and this error stopped. However, an hour later we realized that all of our workflows site-wide started failing with "Failed to Start" Error. We also could not publish any new workflows to SharePoint from Designer. We got this error and have now uninstalled the hotfix and the security update from both our WFE/APP servers:

We are experiencing this on Server 2012, based on the list in ms13-052 we have uninstalled KB2844289 as this seemed to be the closest match.

A quick fix is to put the xslt in a file in a library or in the hive and use that instead of inline in your web part.
