Remove obsolete tags in TFS Service RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

We've been using the handy tags feature in TFS Service but developers have been adding these themselves so now we have lots of tags that are similar but slightly different :( This isn't helped by the fact that in Chrome the dropdown list of tasks does not appear on creation of a work item, but only appears when the work item is actually saved and you go back to edit it.

Is there anyway to perform some "housekeeping" to remove tags that are no longer needed?

  • If you remove a tag from all work items, it will be deleted from the system after three (3) days. There is no other centralized way to manage them at this time. We’re continually updating the Team Foundation Service with performance, reliability, and feature enhancements. You can help us prioritize this by submitting bugs at http://connect.microsoft.com/visualstudio and suggestions at http://visualstudio.uservoice.com/forums/121579-visual-studio/category/30925-team-foundation-server.

  • I would love to see a drop down control appear when you click the Tag Add button that lists all of the defined tags. The idea is to eliminate having the same tag multiple times in the list but worded or spelled differently. I would also like to be able to manage the list via a Global List. It would also help solve the problem of needing to select multiple values from a set. (i.e. Ability to select which branch office(s) has requested a particular feature.)

  • I might have missed it, but where's the answer to the actual question "Is there anyway to perform some "housekeeping" to remove tags that are no longer needed?" ?

  • These folks created an extension for VS that lets you manage tags a little more proactively than just waiting three days for unused tags to hopefully be culled:

So far, it seems simple and does what they say it does.
