Is it possible to access older Bing imagery in ArcGIS10 RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,

I've been using the Bing basemaps in ArcGIS 10. I'm studying bird ecology and have been overlaying bird GPS locations on to Bing imagery to see where the birds go and what habitats they choose.

The Bing imagery has been super clear, however, Bing has just recently updated the imagery for my study location in New Zealand and now the imagery is very dark and almost unusable.

I was wondering if there is a way to access previous Bing imagery? I previously downloaded the Bing aerial layer (when it was clear) but this has automatically updated to the newer images too.

    Regards

  • No - you can't access old versions of imagery (or download them locally). The most useful thing you could do is to report the problem at www.bing.com/maps (click feedback at the bottom left) - and state the area and zoom level affected - it might be that there was a processing problem that could be corrected.

  • Can you provide the area information where the imagery is an issue and I'll pass it on to our imagery team for investigation. Also, if you want access to older Bing Maps imagery you may be able to license that from Vexcel (http://vexcel.com/Pages/default.aspx).

  • Hi Richard,

The area I am interested in is in Glen Dhu, Otago, New Zealand. The extent of the tile covering the area I'm interested in is (N: -43.774009, E: 168.968527, S: -45.036316, W: 168.758146). The issue occurs when imagery is zoomed into a scale of 500 m or less.

For comparison, this whole tile used to be the same clarity as the thin tile directly to the east.

If you need any more information please ask.

Once again, apologizes for the double up.

    Regards

    Jim
