Affinity Group Name as guid (new portal) RRS feed

  • Question

  • We use affinity groups quite extensively. Because of this we have a fair number of them defined. In the new Azure Portal on the Affinity Group mgmt page the Name column is always showing a guid. Yet if I go to the old portal I see the name I gave the affinity group. I thought this was just a bug for months and ignored it, but now I am thinking it has to do with the fact that there is a Name and a Label associated with an affinity group.

It appears when I create one in the old portal it shows up in the new portal as a guid. But if I create one in the new portal it shows up in the old portal with the correct name. My guess is that the new portal is setting both the name and Label to be the same text, whereas the old portal is just setting the Label and using a new guid for the Name.

Can anyone confirm this is a known issue?

So the problem I have is that I have a few dozen affinity groups scattered throughout our subscriptions that were all created in the old portal and there appears to be no way to change the name to match the label. This makes the new portal very hard to use for me with regards to affinity groups.

  • Hi,

If you create the affinity group using the UI, the name you give for the affinity group becomes the affinity group label and the UI in the background generates a guid which it set as the name of the affinity group. This is a known issue.

  • Thank you for the confirmation Allen. Do you know if this is something that will be addressed? I hate the thought of living with seeing Guids in the new Portal forever.

  • To add to this, I am unable to select an affinity group that was created in the old portal during virtual network creation.  In addition, when having multiple subscriptions, I can not choose which subscription my affinity group belongs to when creating it through the new portal.  The same is true when creating virtual networks.

  • Agreed. In my experience there are a number of things that are broken in the new Portal when you have multiple accounts within the same LiveId.

  • I found a workaround to add, in new portal, an affinity group for a subscription other than default: add (temporary) a co-administrator with a fake LiveId account for desired subscription, logoff/logon with that account and create the affinity group that you wish. Finally, you will be able to view this AG with your real account. That's it (view the picture).
