DX11 with Media Foundation RRS feed

  • Question

  • I see in the MSDN documentation here

    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/hh447677%28v=VS.85%29.aspx

    Attributes like MF_SA_D3D11_AWARE

I notice the documentation states "Windows Developer Preview"

Are these just for Windows 8, or are they for something else?

  • These are for Windows 8.  Windows 7 and below do not natively support DX11.

  • Direct3D 11 is part of Windows 7. Some parts of DXGI are even present in Vista.

So, do you really mean to say that Media Foundation does not work with DX11 in Windows 7? Will we get access to MF/DX11 interfaces such as IMFDXGIDeviceManager in any future updates for Windows 7, or are we supposed to stick with DX9 in any Win7 apps that use MF?

  • Media Foundation on Windows 7 does not work natively with DX11.  The EVR uses DX9 and DXVA2 uses DX9.  If you wanted to write your own custom components, you could support DX11/DXGI in those.

It is still uncertain what parts of MF will be back ported to Windows 7.  We will know more details once we get closer to the release of Windows 8.
