configuring Kernel mode debugging in VMWare

  • I am into driver development on Windows 7 in VS 2012. I am using VMWare in my host win 7 PC and  I need to confiure kernel mode debugging environment in my VMWare.

For a start , I need to place the source files in my host machine and debug from my host PC into the VM.

I did the steps as shownin the below link

But it doesnt seem to work. When I connect to the VM, I am getting a screen as attached below:

It doesnt seem to connect. I also need to set breakpoints and step. Can someone please mention the steps or point some doc or link where kernel mode debugging with VMWare is explaned?

  • The help file that comes with windbg explains the VMware debugging just fine, and this works for most people (incl. myself). Check it out.

(Note: the windbg is not related to the WDK8+VS2012/13 "deployment" procedure... hope you do not try to run both concurrently)

  • Also take a look at - their vm debugging setup was pretty nifty for vbox, and it appears to do the same for vmware. Plus free.
