  • This is a documented issue with secure boot that can be found at http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/hardware/hh998740.aspx

In some cases, having Secure Boot enabled on a test computer can cause the HCK Client installation to fail. Follow these steps to ensure proper installation:

For system tests and non-class driver device tests

    1. Disable Secure Boot protections.
      • For x86/x64, enter your BIOS configuration and disable Secure Boot.
      • For Windows RT, install the Windows Debug Policy; you don't need to disable Secure Boot.

This can only be done by OEMs and Microsoft.

  • Look at the log file C:\Users\Aava\AppData\Local\Temp\Windows Hardware Certification Kit Client_Install.log for an error. Look for "return value 3" and see what the previous few lines show. Share those here if you still don't understand the issue.

  • Is there another instance of "return value 3" earlier in the log file. There are usually multiple instances of that value. Please verify and include the first instance of "return value 3".

  • Hello John Garcia,

In my setup which the SUT is a Windows Server Essential 2012, HCK client installation gives the same 1603 error and the log at the first instance of its returned value is as below, can you help me on this :

  • Hello John,

I am consistently getting this error while installing HCK client 2.0 (Build ID: 8.59.29854). The error occurs while WDTF is being installed. I am using a fresh system with windows-8 64-bit.

From the logs it looks like WDTF was not uninstalled properly (WDTFInstall: ERROR already installed , please un-install before re-installing.). So before trying to reinstall HCK client, I uninstalled the HCK components from control panel. But still I am getting the same error.

Below is the log snippet before the first occurrence of 'return value 3'. Could you please  help on this?

  • Hi Kunal,

At this point we suggest clean installing the OS (after formatting hard disk) on your test system. There are likely some traces of WDTF left in the registry. (If the uninstall of WDTF from appwiz.cpl worked properly, then it would have cleaned up the registry entries as well and let you install WDTF with HCK install).

    Thanks,
    Sandeep

  • Hi Sandeep,

I clean installed the OS (this time 32 bit) and tried installing the same HCK client. But still the same problem persists.

But when I loaded the same OS on Lenovo T500 Laptop, and installed the same client on this machine, it worked fine (kind of baffling).

    Regards,

    Kunal
