Search won't locate files with contains: <the string> RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have a directory that contains source code files that are all ascii.  I have a function name I pulled from one file and I wanted to locate it in other files in the source.  So I copied it and put it in the search box at the top with the "contains: " prefix.  It doesn't even find it in the file I copied it from.

On XP, I could resolve this issue by changing a flag in the registry HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\ContentIndex.  I would set FilterFilesWithUnknownExtensions to 1 and I would be golden.

Win 7 Pro x64 doesn't have the filter keys in that registry location.  Is there some other way to force search to consider unknown file extensions?  I have the Always serach file names and contents enabled in the Search options, but it doesn't consider unknown extensions.
