Giving a Friendly Name to certificate when adding from certmgr.exe RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,

    I have a certificate "mytestcert.cer" created from makecert.exe and I want to provide a batch file using certmgr.exe to import the cert to CurretnUser MY store with a "Friendly Name". How can I do this?

    Thanks,
    Prabhat

  • I think the best way to do this is using certreq to create the cert [and its corresponding key]. Certreq takes an "inf" file as input which specifies what the resulting request [or cert] should look like.

    In your case, I think you want to use an inf file like:

    [NewRequest]
        Subject = "CN=My Test Cert"
        Exportable = true
        RequestType = Cert
        FriendlyName = "My Own Friendly Name"

    And then run certreq -new my.inf out.cer

    Out.cer will be the cert with the given friendly name. The cert will also be installed in your MY store.

  • This is just creating a CSR (a request) that would then be submitted to the CA.

    This is old so I assume the asker has solved his issue but just wanted to be clear this is not creating a certificate.
