[UWP]Setting Image Source as gif crashes entire app RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have  a app where I load posts from a feed. This started failing today and the root cause was found to be a image with gif as a source.

    Step to Reproduce:

     1. Create a UWP app using default Visual Studio 2015 "Blank App" template. (SDK Target 14393)

     2. In the MainPage.xaml, add the following content:

    <Grid Background="{ThemeResource ApplicationPageBackgroundThemeBrush}">
            <Image Source="" />

     3. Run the sample app. The App crashes instantly.

    Even after handling the Unhandled Exceptions, the app still crashes.

    If I capture a crash dump using SysInternals ProcDump I get the following exception detail:

    Unhandled exception at 0x00007FF86B67E946 (Windows.UI.Xaml.dll) in App1.exe_161218_195109.dmp: 0xC000027B: An application-internal exception has occurred (parameters: 0x0000021ECDC7A8A0, 0x0000000000000001).

    Please provide a solution.

  • I guess because it is an animated gif

  • @Ken,

    I have had animated gif working fine before in the app.

    This is the first time the app is crashing. Previously, if at all the image/gif would not load it would be left blank but no error would occur let alone an app crash.

  • The same gif is crashing one of my apps.  I am going to write a converter online to create a png version of the image but for now i am using a default image instead of showing any gifs in my app.

  • Hi Shubhan,

    I can also reproduce your issue in my side. I have tried many gif images, only this: gif image crash in my app, others gif images work very well.

    Currently as a workaround you can try to use the Lumia Imaging sdk to play the GIF image: .

    Besides, I will discuss with the related team about this issue. Once there is any update, I will post it here.

    Thanks for your understanding.

    Best Regard,
    Fang Peng
