Installing UWP via App-Installer results in Fatal Error 0x8000FFF (Deployment Add operation with target volume C: failed...) RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

    so, right at the beginning, here's the error message in german:
    Der Bereitstellungsvorgang "Add" mit Zielvolume "C:" für das Paket "Update_Test_Foo_Bar" von " (Update_Test_1.0.7.0_x86_Debug.appx) " ist mit dem Fehler 0x8000FFFF fehlgeschlagen.

    This should translate to:
    Deployment Add operation with target volume C: on Package "Update_Test_Foo_Bar"  from:(Update_Test_1.0.7.0_x86_Debug.Appx) failed with error 0x8000FFFF.

    What is my goal:
    - Using the UWP-feature for auto-updates.

    What I've already done:
    - Created WebApplication for as our update-Website on our internal WebServer (http://ourServer/UwpUpdate) (mime-types already set like mentioned here: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/msix/app-installer/create-appinstallerfile-vs at the bottom)
    - Create completely new Solution (Blank UWP App C#)
    - Signed the freshly created Project with our Comodo-certificate (already installed to: trusted Publishers, trusted Persons and trusted root certification authorities)
    - Right click on Project -> Store -> Create App Packages -> Create packages for sideloading + checked the "Enable auto updates"-Checkbox.
    - Create app bundle -> if needed
    - Build -> Release (x86)
    - Installation URL/UNC-Path: http://ourServer/UwpUpdate
    - hit "Create"
    - Copied resulting Directory, AppInstaller-File and html-Document into the local Directory for our Update-Website on our Webserver.
    - visit http://ourServer/UwpUpdate from one of our company PCs (at least Win 10 Prof. v.1803) and hit "install". App Installer opens but above error appears.
    - Files can be downloaded from every computer in our company and can be installed successfully via Powershell-commands but even a doubleclick on a downloaded appx- or appinstaller-File will result in App-Installer throwing the error above.

    Our App-Installer-Version is: 1.0.30732.0 (latest version from MS Store)
    My Dev-PC has: Windows 10 Professional Version 1809, Build 17763.439. We make use of domain users but even with a freshly created local admin-user i got that error.

  • Hello Alex,

    I see that the error is from a debug appx "Update_Test_1.0.7.0_x86_Debug.appx", but your build is release build. Not so sure which is the true setting. But based on the troubleshooting page:

    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/msix/app-installer/troubleshoot-appinstaller-issues#dependencies-not-installed

    If you are using a debug build, please change it so that dependency is not missing.

    Also if my guessing is right, you are using IIS to deploy your web app. So what about check the MIME from here:

    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/msix/app-installer/web-install-iis#step-7---configure-the-web-app-for-app-package-mime-types

    By the way, the error 0x8000FFFF means "Catastrophic failure", not so useful for us to understand the reason.

    Barry

  • Hello Barry Wang,

    thank you for your reply. Sorry for the confusion about Debug and Release-Builds... I tried both... several times... for x86 as well as x64... So I just grabbed one of the many error messages tracked in the EventLog.

    And the thing with catastrophic failure... Sure, I would like to have more information too, but that's all I have...

    That's the output when I attach the debugger to AppInstaller.exe and hit "install":

    The thread 0x43cc has exited with code 0 (0x0).

    All dependencies referenced in the .appinstaller-File were installed (via powershell) out of my projects AppPackages-Directory. Because this is an absolutely fresh project, there are (at least i think) no other dependencies then the default 3 ones:

    - Microsoft.NET.Native.Framework.2.2.appx

    - Microsoft.NET.Native.Runtime.2.2.appx

    - Microsoft.VCLibs.x86.14.00.appx

    I just tried to build a new Release-Version, put it on the server and tried to install through the browser as well as from my local hard drive, without any positive result.

    The more time I spent on fixing that, the more I think it's a faulty App-Installer or some necessary update is missing but even our IT-specialist has no Idea what can cause this (we spent a day together to figure out what's wrong).

    Is there some log (errors/updates) that could help us to figure out what's wrong? If so, please let me know. Our timeline comes closer and will provide any info I'm able to provide to you.

    Best Regards

    Alex

  • @Alex,

    Since you've already tried all things listed on the doc and your issue is very urgent, I'd recommend you contact a support ticket instead. Urgent issue is not proper for a public forum.  Please go to this site and choose Contact Us->Choose Windows 10 UWP Development Then development tools->package tools  and submit a incident.

    By the way, my I ask what you have wrote in your html page? Like in this page: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/msix/app-installer/web-install-iis#step-6---create-a-web-page

    I'm confused about why it point to a C:\ location.

    Best regards,

    Barry

  • @Barry,

    thank You for the support-link.

    For my test I used the generated html-file that's created along with the other files in the AppPackages-directory.

    Here's the content of that file (formatted, for easier reading):

    <html lang="en">
    <head>
        <meta charset="utf-8" />

    The problem is not the download of the files from the webserver, it's the installation process after they're downloaded.

    I will contact the support-team and as soon as we figured out what went wrong, I will post it in here to provide information to people with a similar problem.

    BTW:

    for those wondering why I'm talking about timelines while I handle an empty project... It's just a Test-Dummy to cross-check if that problem is tied to our main-project or has it roots somewhere else.

    Thanks again

    Regards

    Alex

  • Hi Alexander,

    Did you get any reply from Microsoft? We seem to have the same issue in some cases. (But can't determine when exactly)

    Kind regards,

    Dries Van Damme

  • Hi Dries,

    unfortunatelly still no response from microsoft in the public forums. My boss don't wanted to buy microsofts customer support because it's (at least in our eyes) obviously microsofts bug.

    Hope, they fix it soon.

    Regards
