How read serial port in Windows Store app? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have a scale attached to my USB port.  Using HyperTerminal I am able to verify a continuous reading of the weight.

Is there a Windows Store code sample for how to read this into my app?

    Grateful for any help.

P.S. I'm also curious if (when I get it working on my laptop) if it will work running on an RT device.  It's not a requirement (I can use Windows 8 Pro if needed).. just curious if RT will accommodate (there is a USB port in the Surface RT after all). -thanks

  • Windows 8.1 adds new USB API. See  Writing apps for USB devices (Windows Store apps using C#/VB/C++) for an overview and links to tutorials and samples.

This is not possible in Windows Store apps on Windows 8.

Surface RT vs. Surface Pro won't affect this. Windows Store apps have the same capabilities on both architectures.

  • So even just wanting to read a weight from a scale (going through a serial-to-USB adapter), I couldn't have done it in Windows 8.0?  So I definitely need this new USB namespace?  If so, I guess I'm glad I'm just now needing to figure out or would have been beating my head against the wall I suppose?

    Thanks.
