  • Oracle provided a MySQL connector for Windows Store apps. See https://blogs.oracle.com/MySqlOnWindows/entry/how_to_using_connector_net

Beyond that the general solution is to expose a REST API on the server to manage the DB connection (this is what Azure Mobile Apps do for Azure SQL databases).

  • If you are developing mobile app, then you should use the WebAPI or some other kind of interface. You mobile app should not directly connect to the database. Its BIG security issue. I don't think so you can open the port for database in windows azure. Use the WebAPI or web service. WebAPI is pretty good nowadays.

Even if you are developing desktop app and it'll deploy publicly on user computer(s) then you also need to use WebAPI.

  • Why is it a BIG security risk?
