Windows Phone 8.1: Enterprise Mobile Code Signing Certificate for an internal app distribution RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,

Our company have been renewing our Symantec certificate every year for our windows mobile 8.1 app for internal app distribution. This year, we received an email from Symantec that the issuance of these certificates will no longer be available after February 28, 2019. They gave us an option to renew for 1 or 3 additional year, but we have to do that before February 28, 2019, otherwise we can no longer renew our certificate.

Since Symantec will no longer issue such certificate after February 2019,  we are curious what the future plan is and if there is currently another company that is taking over this, we would like to deal with that company in the future, instead of renewing our current Symantec certificate.

what do you recommend? please advise.

also, i found this link, signing and deploying windows 8.1 apps using an internal code signing certificate from windows server 2008 R2, will that work for windows PHONE 8.1 also?https://blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/wsdevsol/2014/01/28/signing-and-deploying-windows-8-1-applications-using-an-internal-code-signing-certificate-from-windows-server-2008-r2/

    Thanks.

  • Hi RobbieDotNet,

For Windows 8.x/Windows Phone 8.x or earlier, Microsoft Store also begins to not support the new submission of such an app. Could you consider upgrading your Windows phone 8.1 app to a UWP app? The UWP app could available for any Windows device -- PCs, phones, Xbox One, HoloLens, and more. Because of your internal use, you could publish the app in the Microsoft Store for Business which could update your app certificate automatically. For more info, see Working with line-of-business apps and Distribute apps using your private store.

    Best regards

  • Hi Daisy,

We heard that Microsoft will stop supporting  windows 10 Mobile effective January 2020. is that correct? for that reason, we are not planning to upgrade our windows phone 8.x to UWP , we are looking at other options like Android, which is available on the Honeywell handheld devices. We heard that Honeywell devices will not support windows phone 10 after January 2020 , it will only support Android OS in the future.

you mentioned that Microsoft Store also begins to not support the new submission of  windows 8.x phone app, then later you recommended to publish the app in the Microsoft Store for Business which will update our app certificate automatically. is Microsoft Store for Business still supporting the new submission of windows 8.x phone app? if we publish our windows phone 8.x app to Microsoft Store for Business, do we not need our Symantec certificate anymore to deploy the app on the company scanners?

do you recommend to renew our Symantec certificate and continue publishing our app on premises , or you recommend to publish our windows phone 8.x app to the Microsoft Store for Business?

When there is a new update or version, will Microsoft Store for Business automatically install it on the device?

    thanks for your help.

  • Hi RobbieDotNet,

    >is Microsoft Store for Business still supporting the new submission of windows 8.x phone app?

No,it didn't support the Windows 8.1X phone app in the future,I recommend you update your app to UWP and distribute it in the Microsoft Store for business. All submissions for LOB apps(Microsoft Store for Business) must be published through Partner Center and the app goes through the same certification process, and must comply with all Microsoft Store Policies.

  • Hi, I wanted to know how you solved the matter, unfortunately we are in the same situation and at the moment it is no longer possible to download a certificate to install. the site where the certificate was purchased was this: http:dev.windows.com/it-it/Registration/AccountInfo

The certificate (annual) will expire shortly on several dozen terminals that run on Wndows Phone 8.1.

What solution do we have to reactivate them?

    Thanks Marco

  • We bought the extended certificate that expires in 2022 but we can't publish updates to the apps currently because it seems that it cannot verify the workplace account exists.  I believe that when Microsoft shut down the store, they shut down the ability to connect to the workplace accounts as well.

Hopefully there is a solution as there are many of these devices still in use.  One option for you may be to upgrade to Windows 10 but not all devices have that ability and the app would need to be ported to UWP.

  • Thanks, in our case account management is not necessary, we would need a valid AETX and PFX certificate to sign the APP, as it is used only on a private network and does not go through the store. In addition, the terminals that we have do not have the possibility to pass them to Windows 10, and the transition to UWP is certainly very long ..

I know I make a risky request, but does anyone have an AETX and PFX file active also for 2020?

    Thanks Marco

  •

Keep in mind that we are willing to buy the certificate without any problem. Marco
