Viewability rate is very low

    Question

  • We are getting a very low Viewability rate ~ 6% to 9% on PC/Table devices. Viewability on Mobile is ~ 50%. We validated (at least from what we can tell) that the ads are 100% visible and should stay on the screen for at least a second (unless the user switches to another page of the App in less than 1 second).

Is there a way to tell the reason for a low Viewability rate? Is it something that we can improve on our side or is it something on the Microsoft side?

    Thank you! CompaNova LLC

  • Hi CompaNova,

    >We are getting a very low Viewability rate ~ 6% to 9% on PC/Table devices

Which did you choose the Filter and the time period for the report? How long has this phenomenon of low Viewability rate happened? Sometimes, the data may delay for some days.

    >Is there a way to tell the reason for a low Viewability rate?

Viewability is calculated using the following formula: Viewability = [Viewed impressions] * 100 / [ Total ad impressions](Derive from document:Optimize the viewability of your ad units) .The impressions elements are available in the Ad campaign report.

  • We raised a support issue with this and all the ridiculous 'engineering team' could come back with after about 6 weeks was that

"Revenue looks to be constant from July till now. However viewability has dropped over the period but it’s not something that effects revenue or estimates."

    Then promptly closed the case.

Weve pointed out MS own documents on this stating quite clearly that viewability DOES matter - even if MS engineering claim its not used currently its bound to be in the future - because thats what advertizers want to know - esp if they might be 'below the fold'.

We know our banner ads should be something close to 100% unless there is something fundamentally wrong somewhere because they are always on screen if the app is displayed - there is no such thing as 'below the fold' in our games.

That plus the fact the Fiddler trace shows that the SDK quite clearly delivers 'viewability' data sets of almost 100% from any/all the Dev PCs here.

The viewability crashed almost overnight late Oct/early Nov as per scn shot:

Obviously there is no data after early Jan because the dash as usual is weeks behind reality..

  • Hi Daisy,

We did read the documentation and researched the issue before posing this question here. Quoting documentation does not really help or answer the question. In fact, if you read our post again, we mentioned that our impressions are 100% visible and stay on the screen for longer than one second. We mentioned this to indicate that we followed and satisfied all requirements specified in the article you referred to. However, Viewability rate is less than 10%. We are wondering why it is so low and what could be done to troubleshoot and improve this? Or is this an issue on Microsoft side?

To answer your other questions, the Viewabiltiy rate dropped significantly in October. See the snapshot for the Viewability rate across all our Apps. It varies by App, where some Apps go as low as 5%.

    Thank you! CompaNova LLC

  • Hi Daisy,

It's been over a week. Have you heard anything back from the 'related' team? Any updates?

    Thanks!

  • FWIW:

Our viewability is now reporting 0, zero, nothing for the last 30 days.

Fiddler trace still reporting close to 100% in the content being sent back to servers.

How is that not an issue?

  • Can confirm similar problems on our end - we've had a support ticket on this for a bit over 2 months now (issue began at the start of November for us).  Good news is support has said engineering is looking into at least one known issue.  IDK to what extent it is the root cause however.

  • Same problem here. Viewability is 0. On some ad units eCPM == 0. But most funny thing some ad units have more impressions than requests haha. Advertising report is broken again and again :)
