How to place 'Uninstall' in Programs (menu) in Start menu RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi All,

    I created a setup project for an outlook add-in. Wrote custom actions and it is working fine. Now, I want to place a short-cut in the Programs menu to uninstall the add-in. I am a bit clueless and didn't know how to proceed.

    Can anyone please suggest me how to proceed?

    Thanks in advance!

  • First, this is not recommended any more. Add Remove Programs is where this is supposed to be done. It's actually unusual to see this with MSI setups that just uninstall from ARP without you having to write a bunch of code.  There is no value add in cluttering up the start menu with duplicate functionality.

    Second, it's not as easy as you think. You'll need to install a program to do it, and add a shortcut to it to run the equivalent of:

    msiexec /X {productcode}

    but keep in kind that this program also needs to be uninstalled. Attempts to do this typically leave the program behind (and ask for a reboot to remove it), leave the install folder behind, or leave the shortcut behind.
