Reporting Services on SQL Azure

Any indication when Reporting Services will be available on SQL Azure?Friday, October 23, 2009 3:32 PM

No committed plans yet for Reporting as a service.
You can use a local installation of SSRS and tools like Report Builder to build reports from your SQL Azure databases. Since the SQL Azure service exposes a TDS/T-SQL end point, most all of the tools and capabilities of the broader SQL Server ecosystem "just work" today.
In some case, due to the assumptions the connection dialogs and other UI code made (pre-SQL Azure) you might have to employ some workarounds to be successful. We are working to ensure that with the upcoming KJ release of SQL Server, using these tools and capabilities with SQL Azure is directly supported.- Proposed as answer by Patric McElroy Saturday, October 24, 2009 3:29 PM

I've got to say, I'm pretty disappointed to see this answer.
In this thread: http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/windowsazure/thread/ee168d0e-49e5-4dc6-a3ac-a86cf96fd73b there is an indication that SSRS will be included in SQL Azure (although the web page the thread links to has now changed).
Using a local installation of SSRS just gives us additional licensing and hosting fees, and isn't scalable.
This could well be a deal breaker for many potential customers.- Edited by Matt_McQueen Monday, October 26, 2009 2:42 PM spelling

On-site reporting services can generate reports from SQL Servers, SQL Azure besides many others. What special advantage do you think would result from having SSRS in the cloud?

If you are running SSRS on-site to report on data in the cloud, you will incur:
1. Additional license fees for SSRS on-site.
2. Additional costs for hosting, or costs for running your own server.
3. Cost of pulling data down from Azure to the reporting server.
Your reporting system will also be non-scalable.
These are all problems that cloud computing is supposed to alleviate.

I would be very much interested in this too. We are running a SaaS solution which heavily relies on SSRS. Azure looks like a perfect match for us mainly because it guarantees availability. Having to host SSRS on-site ruins this advantage.Wednesday, August 4, 2010 10:30 PM

Ok, lets digest what Patric is acctually saying here.
He is mearly saying that there is no "commited" plans for when SSRS will be availible in the Azure.
That combined with this post http://cwebbbi.spaces.live.com/blog/cns!7B84B0F2C239489A!6660.entry?sa=1822731 makes me quite sure that its not a question of if, rather when it will be availible.
So hang in there people.. :)

I agree with Raoul. If I had to hazard a guess, I'd say that the challenge is figuring out how to throttle resource consumption of a reporting process so as not to have a negative impact on other clients co-hosted on the same physical hardware.
Furthermore, I'd see them working with the next gen SQL Server team as that is reportedly going to have sandboxing functionality. Bring that sandboxing capability into SQL Azure and use it to help deliver reporting and there ya go! :)
Pure speculation on my part of course.

I can see that the report Server is available under /ReportServer, does anyone know if the /reports/ is planned to be published as part of the CTP or the Live?
