DOTNET Framework 3.5 Full Redistributable Package needs to download extra data from Microsoft

  • Hello,

I've downloaded .net Full Redistributable Package from Microsoft servers but when I try to install it on some machines with windows XP service pack 3 installed, the setup tries to download 44MB extra data from the Microsoft website.

What is this "extra" data? Is it possible to install it on machines not connected to the internet? Does a setup for those "extra" files exists?

  • The .NET Framework 3.5 full install package (available at the page doesn't need any network connection.

It includes all prerequisites and product components that could need to be installed for any processor architecture.  Basically, it is the union of the x86, x64 and ia64 packages and prerequisites.  The .NET Framework 3.5 includes the following prerequisites in addition to the main .NET Framework 3.5 product payload:

    • .NET Framework 2.0 with SP1
    • .NET Framework 3.0 with SP1
    • MSXML 6.0
    • RGB Rasterizer
    • Windows Imaging Components (WIC)

The 200 megabyte full install package was not really designed to be redistributed as is by installers that require the .NET Framework, although it will work fine for that purpose if the installer does not have any sensitivity to the larger package size.

  • Hello,

    Thank you for your reply.

I'm talking about the 200 MB full Install Package.

When I install it, it still prompts me to download 44MB extra data, before starting any installation. I can send screenshots of that to you. I downloaded it from the link you mentionned above.

  • Did you use the one: .NET Framework 3.5 full package ?

What makes you think it needs more from Internet?

You can use to upload the screenshot here to clarify a bit.

  • Hello,

Yes I used exacly this one. It makes me think that because It simply prompts me to do so, like the non-full redist does, but with less data to download. I'm under windows XP pro sp3 FR version.

I uninstalled it then reinstalled it to take screenshots. This time, it is only a 20MB extra data download, but it still downloads something.

Here is the link to those screenshots:

Look at the install 1 and 3 picture files Smile

Even when I uninstall DOTNET, it downloads something!

  • Thanks for your clarification.

Actually, .NET Framework 3.5 can be successfully installed with this full package offline. The downloading process attempts to download some security fixes along with the .NET 3.5 installation.

Thank you for your quick reply and support.

Is it possible to download those security fixes separately?

Did you find any solution because we are facing the same problem and I don't really find any help by MS?

  • To download the full redistributable package, rather than the bootstrapper, click on the link below to start the download:

  • Hello,

The problem everyone has: It is the Redistributable Package (237,054 KB)  that is connecting to the Internet to download additional software.

The only solution I found is to make sure the Server you are installing Redistributable Dot Net on does not have internet access, then the Redistributable Package will just ignore it and carry on.

  • Hi,

The re-distibutable (201MB version) is attempting to download 55MB additional data. That's the same amount of data that the bootstrapper version attempts to download, so it looks like it's doing exactly the same thing. Please can this be addressed. I can't afford to block everyone from accessing the internet, just to get this package installed on umpteen machines.
