Addin fails to load for debugging RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have an excel VSTO addin. When I try to debug it in visual studio it doesn't show up in excel. I have no idea what has happened. If I install the addin it is not visible in excel. If I take the same install to another machine it installs perfectly in excel.

I've tried creating a new addin just to see what is broken and it loads in excel.

    Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

  • Hello again Stumple,

I guess that this add-in has been disabled. Microsoft Office applications can disable add-ins that behave unexpectedly while they are being loaded. If an application does not load your add-in when you try to debug it, the application might have hard disabled or soft disabled your add-in. However, I am not sure exact reason for this issue. However, I think this article might give you some idea: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms268871(VS.90).aspx. Have you tried to put the code into try and catch block? There might be an exception during the startup. Since you have tested with a new and simple add-in, and it works fine, I guess this issue might be related to be code itself.

Here is an article about loadbehavior: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb386106.aspx

  • I have no idea what happened. I did a regclean then ran addinutil.exe and then ran a regscript I have to restore the addin entries.

For some reason my addin is working again, for now.

  • I have an excel addin using VSTO. I am running VS 2010 to develop it. I have a problem where I have to run a reg file everytime I want to debug the addin so that it shows in Excel. After I stop my debugging I have to run the reg file again in order to get the addin to show in excel if I want to again debug it. Here is the excel file. Maybe someone knows what I am doing wrong.

  • Hello Stumple,

Thanks for posting. Glad to know that your add-in works fine on your side. If you have any further question about not loading, I'd like to suggest you could troubleshoot the issue by following this blog: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/vsto/archive/2010/06/21/troubleshoot-vsto-add-in-load-failures-navneet-gupta.aspx. By setting the "VSTO_SUPPRESSDISPLAYALERTS" environment variable to 0, and setting the LoadBehavior to 3, now restart the Excel, and you will probably see an error message.

Also here is a good article about deploying VSTO solutions. Hope this article also could help you.

  • Hello Stumple,

Thanks for posting. To deploy a VSTO add-in, we do not need to run reg file additional. We could set the registry values in Setup project. I am not sure what version of Excel you are working with. However, I think you could fine an appropriate entry link in this thread of Mary Lee.

  • I tried all of that. I always leave the VSTO_SUPPRESSDISPLAYALERTS at 0 on my development machine. I wasn't getting any errors. Everytime I would set the loadbehavior to 3 it would be set back to 0. I have posted my findings in another thread.

    Thanks.

  • I have no problem deploying my addin. My adding deploys fine on any machine I have installed it to. I have deployed it to many users already. The problem I am having is on my development machine.  Everytime I rebuild my addin project something happens. So, I rebuild my addin project. I run the reg file and then I  debug my addin. These are the steps I have to take.

I am using Excel 2007 as my target environment. I have Excel 2007 on my machine. I have VSTO 2005 SE, VSTO 2010, Visual studio 2005, Visual studio 2010.

I am developing the addin in VS2010.

  • Hello again Stumple,

This issue seems to the same as one in this case: http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/vsto/thread/eb5880c1-9bc3-4079-82c9-8732ea966db7/. Right? If yes, I will merge this case into the thread above. Thanks,
