Microsoft .net framework 4.0 won't install

    Question

  • Hi i wanted to install the microsoft visual c# 2010 express edition on my system. I used to work with the 2008 edition. But when i tried to install this new version i always got stuck in the part where it's installing .net framework 4. I always get the same error that it could not install the .net framework 4 succesful. I do not get any other message beside that.

I tried to remove 3.5 framework also used the cleanup tool to remove it but i still get the same error. I think it's possible i did something wrong with the permissions of some files in the /windows/ folder. But i'm not sure that's causing the problem.

    I use windows 7 64 bit

I get these error messages in the log file when i try to install .net framework 4 seperatly: Exe (C:\4f147385ffee54ecb42d741c745da3c6\Windows6.1-KB958488-v6001-x64.msu) failed with 0x652 - Er wordt al een andere installatie uitgevoerd. • Hi Dielcaroes,

Thank you for your email and log files.

I've checked the log files and found the following error message:

[6/9/2010, 11:49:13] Action: Performing Action on Exe at C:\d941adf86400bf28fb43\Windows6.1-KB958488-v6001-x64.msu...

[6/9/2010, 11:49:13]PerformOperation on exe returned exit code 1618 (translates to HRESULT = 0x652)
    [6/9/2010, 11:49:13] Action complete

It is the same error message I mentioned above as "Another installation is already in progress. Complete that installation before proceeding with this install." It occurred when the installer tried to upgrade Windows6.1-KB958488-v6001-x64.msu.
Have you checked whether .NET Framework 4.0 installation is the only installation process and you didn't run Windows Update at the same time?

Hope this helps! If you have any concern, please feel free to let me know.

  • Hi Dielcaroes,

    Thank you for your reply.

Since the error occurred when the installer tried to upgrade Windows6.1-KB958488-v6001-x64.msu via Windows Update, you might try some command steps to repair Windows Update.
    Please:
Reset WU components: How do I reset Windows Update components?
Reinstall WU Agent: How to obtain the latest version of the Windows Update Agent to help manage updates on a computer

If above things don't help then follow below:

1.Run cmd.exe with admin rights (right click on cmd.exe as admin) and type:

    sfc /scannow

2.Run Readiness Tool: Description of the System Update Readiness Tool for Windows Vista, for Windows Server 2008, for Windows 7, and for Windows Server 2008 R2

If still no avail, I would suggest you to try Windows Update discussion group. I believe that Windows Update experts might be helpful on your concern.

Hope this helps! If you have any concern, please feel free to let me know.

  • Hi Dielcaroes,

    Thank you for your post.

For error code "1618", it means "Another installation is already in progress. Complete that installation before proceeding with this install." Please make sure that .NET Framework 4.0 installation is the only installation process and you don't run Windows Update at the same time.

If the problem still exists, could you please try the following steps to install .NET Framework 4.0 for further troubleshooting?

    1. Download .NET Framework 4.0 Standalone installer
Note: You can try some download manager software to help downloading.

    2. Run the installer to install .NET 4.0 with Administrator Privilege
Note: Right-click the installer >> "Run as Administrator"

    3. If any problem occurs during the installation, use Collect tool to collect the log files for further troubleshooting.

The steps to collect the log:
    - Try to clean your "%temp%" folder (Start Menu >> Run >> Type "%temp%")
    - Install .NET Framework 4.0 Standalone installer
    - Collect the logs from "%temp%" folder
       Collect tool: http://blogs.msdn.com/heaths/archive/2008/05/09/visual-studio-and-net-log-collection-utility.aspx
    - Diagnose the cause of failure installation
       Option 1:
Try the points mentioned here: http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/forums/en-US/vssetup/thread/0376db8f-4761-4ae5-9af2-98c53216318a#How_to_diagnoseVS2008_NETFramework_logs to diagnose the cause of failure installation.
       Option 2:
Send vslogs.cab file to me (v-yicche@microsoft.com)
Note: Please attach the link of this post in the mail.

Hope this helps! If you have any concern, please feel free to let me know.

  • Hi again

I tried to install the framework over and over again and it always fails. I'm 100% sure that no other installation is in progress (not that I know of i mean). I installed all the latest windows updates, rebooted the system and the first thing I did was run the setup again. But no luck.

I noticed in the unpacking process that the install unpacked everything on my external HDD and not on my C drive, strange.

    Regards

  • Hi Dielcaroes,

Thank you for your reply. And sorry for delay.

I'm not quite sure whether your external HDD caused the problem. However, you might try to remove the external HDD and try to install .NET Framework 4.0 again.

Let me know if it doesn't work.

    Best regards,

  • I am also having problems with the .Net Framework 4 Stand alone Installer.  It shows the progress bar at about 1/3 of the installation and says "Installing .NET Framework 4 Client Profile" and it hangs the computer.  No mouse activity, No keyboard activity, complete lockup.

I'm using a fresh install of windows XP Pro with Service Pack 3 redistributable installed.

I can't install my video drivers (catalyst v8) without a .Net Framework installed :-(  (All-in-Wonder Radeon)

  • Just for helping people who still encounter this issue.

wusa.exe will try to create a temporary wusa.lock file in the C:\windows folder when it triggers the installation of Windows6.1-KB958488-v6001-x64.msu. If the user who trigerred the installation doesn't have write permissions on C:\Windows this error will be thrown. You can find this by simply running the ProcMon tool. Solution is give the User modify permissions on C:\windows and run the installation it will run fine.

  • During the installation of the Framwork, watch for multiple instances of the msiexec.exe process (in windows task manager). If the installation indicates something like "...installation process is waiting for another process to complete...", simply kill all instances of msiexec.exe process.

    Hope this helps
