Can't Run Microsoft Visual C# 2012 Step by Step Code Examples Using Microsoft Visual C# 2012 Express RRS feed

  • Question

  • I am studying the book "Microsoft Visual C# 2012 Step by Step which comes with companion content containing many Visual C# 2012 solutions/projects. Visual Studio Express 2012 for Windows Desktop is installed on my computer. When I try to open one of the companion solutions (.sln file), Visual Studio displays an error message:

Title: Review Project and Solution Changes

Body: These projects are either not supported or need project behavior impacting modifications to open in this version of Visual Studio. Projects not displayed either require no changes or will automatically be modified such that behavior is not impacted.

    Unsupported

This version of Visual Studio does not have the following project types installed or does not support them. You can still open these projects in the version of Visual Studio in which they were originally created.

    ..\BinaryTree\BinaryTree.csproj

How can I open the Visual C# 2012 companion solutions in Visual Studio 2012 Express?

  • Hi,

You will not be able to open the solution file using visual studio express.

But Create a blank solution in Visual Studio express and add all the projects to the blank solution file using add existing project option.

    Hi mgreen10,

Based on the error message, generally it means that your VS version doesn’t support these projects or they were created using higher edition of Visual Studio and use some of those advanced features.

So if possible, please use other version to test it using the Ultimate, professional or Premium version.

As AyyappanSubramanian’s suggestion, to make sure that whether your projects files are corrupted, it would be a good suggestion.

Or your projects require other tools/packages for your Express version if you make sure that it supports these projects.

One important issue is that maybe just one specific project has this issue if there are several projects in the same solution. We would think about the specific project with the above steps.

    Best Regards,

    Jack

  • Is this definitely a windows solution?

Because there are different versions of express for web and windows.
