VS needs repaired every time I want to use it, cannot open existing projects

    Question

  • Can somebody please help with this it is getting very annoying.

Every time I want to use visual studio I have to run the installer and choose repair. If I create a new project all is fine, if I open an exisiting project I have worked on before I get an error.

After I get this error, I am no longer able to create new projects either...

So after the repair I can create new projects, but once I try to open one it will give me errors and will need to be repaired.

I have already reinstalled VS twice now.

    Please help.

Attached some screenshots of errors I am getting.

  • Hi Fearghal,

    Thanks for your post.

This page may a little related to your issue, let's check it first:

    http://connect.microsoft.com/VisualStudio/feedback/details/532121/tons-of-package-did-not-load-correctly-errors

From that post we can see that his solution is to reinstall the msi related to his error.

Your error seems related to tempalte from that error message and from your error message there are more things such as:

    'Microsoft.VisualStudio.IDE.ToolboxControlsInstaller"

So the issue may due to IDE or related to template, I suggest you try the following:

    1. Repair your VS as before

    2. Try the followings to fix IDE related issue:

Please open an administrative CMD window and navigate to C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 11.0\Common7\IDE and run these commands:

    1).devenv.exe /safemode

    2).devenv.exe /resetskippkgs

    3).devenv.exe /installvstemplates

    4).devenv.exe /resetsettings

    5).devenv.exe /resetuserdata

Note that the above steps are unrelated and so checking if your issue has been resolved, after every step may help you save time on steps that were not required!

Please rename these 2 registry keys under the registry editor:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\VisualStudio\11.0_Config

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\VisualStudio\11.0

Let's see if that helps for you.

    Regards,

    Barry Wang

  • Hi Barry,

Thanks for the reply - unfortunately this has not resolved my issue. I have reinstalled VS2013 at least 5 or 6 times. I have repaired it over 50 and it works fine THE FIRST TIME. Once I close a project and try to re-open it, VS freaks out and throws all sorts of errors.

    Getting very frustrated now :(
