TFS 2013 to TFS 2015 Upgrade RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

We are in the process of upgrading TFS 2013 Update 5 to TFS 2015

We plan to retain the same build servers and SQL Servers and having new 2 servers for App Tier only in a load balanced environment

Please can someone help me with the recommendations for the same.

Should I use the Upgrade approach after TFS 2015 installation in the new servers or to use App Tier only option.

SQL 2014 is in SP1 and planning to install SP2. Hope everything to be okay with SQL SP installation.

Also, Planning to do it in DEV first

Let me know if you have any queries

  • 1) SQL server
    2) Upgrade TFS.
    3) After your upgrade your SQL server successfully, install TFS 2015 and choose "Upgrade" in the configuration wizard.

  • Hi Venkat,

Yes, actually SQL 2012 SP1 and SP3 both supported with TFS 2015.

  • Hi Venkatesan Nadimuthu,

    Thank you for posting here.

Let me check your scenario first: you will to have a build server, 2 TFS AT server and one DT server. And so you want to move and upgrade TFS to the 2 AT servers, am I right?

I think you should upgrade your SQL server first and then upgrade TFS. After your upgrade your SQL server successfully, install TFS 2015 and choose "Upgrade" in the configuration wizard.

  • Hi Tingting,

    Thanks for your response.

We have SQL Server 2012 with SP1(11.0.3128.0 (X64) ). As per the link below, SQL Server 2012 with SP1 and CU2 is sufficient for upgrade. We are planning to apply SP3. Does that work? or do you recommend anything else?

    TFS Requirements and Compatibility: https://www.visualstudio.com/docs/setup-admin/requirements

Also, on the TFS 2015 upgrade. We have the following for TFS 2013:

2 APP Tier(Load balanced) - 2 New App Tiers with Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard

1 DB Tier - Retain and upgrade to SQL 2012 SP3 from SQL 2012 SP1

2+ Build Servers - Retain and Install TFS 2015 and Upgrade

Let me know if you have any queries

    Many thanks

    Venkat

  • Hi Senthil,

    Thanks for your inputs.

    Hi Tingting/Senthil,

Does upgrade of SP1 to SP3 on SQL 2012 suffice for the TFS 2013 to TFS 2015 upgrade?

    Many thanks

    Venkat
