[URGENT] Distance between two postcodes

  • Hi all,

We have a kind of urgent issue here. We are about to commence development on an application that is to perform calculations based on the distance by road between two postcodes. We were going to use a certain web service provider for this but they have come back saying that they do not support the volume of queries that our application is going to make (potentially 40000 per month).

My question is do any of you guys know of any software or web services that we can interface with to query the distance between two postcodes by road, bearing in mind that this is a UK based operation and reasonable performance is a must.

    Thanks in advance,

  • Have you tried , and Gooogle (aka google maps), I am sure you must have tried one of these.

The two other sources of such information that spring to mind are:

And as a possibility Royal Mail, although from both ordanace survey and Royal Mail, I am sure you will pay through the teeth.

    Good Luck.

  • Thanks for your help,

Yeah, we have tried streetmaps, but they only do 'as the crow flies' distance calculation, whereas we need road distance. Postoffice doesn't seem to offer anything like this, but I will definitely have a look at Ordnance Survey (I really should have thought of them). Also didn't realise that there was an API or web service for Google Maps. Whereabouts can I find information on this? I have tried but can't see any relevant info there.

Again, thanks for your help. It is much appreciated.

Unfortunatley I do not know a great deal about the API, so I am not sure if it can provide the infromation you require, but it certainly looks like a possibility.

  • OK. It looks like google is primarily US based ATM and we have given maporama a contact email so we'll see what comes from that, but it does look as if Maporama is more what we are after.

I'm still open for suggestions though!
