move test suite from one tfs 2010 to another tfs 2012 RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

Earlier we were using TFS 2010 and now moved to TFS 2012. We had made test case suite based on our team project which was on TFS 2010. Now since project is moved to 2012 we want to move test suite also to the same project which is now on 2012.

Is there any way through which we can move test cases from TFS 2010 to TFS 2012. Actually I wanted to used code coverage of MTM which is only available in test manager 2012 version.

    Thanks in Advance.

    Regards.

  • Hi Priyanka,

Yes we can move test cases from TFS 2010 to 2012.

But one thing I want to get clarified from you, TFS 2010 is upgraded to 2012 or TFS 2012 is completely new standalone installation?

If yes ask your administrator to migrate the TFS Database of 2010 to 2012, so that you need not move any thing to 2012 directly you can connect from MTM 2012.

    Thanks

  • Hi Priyanka,

Since you have separate new instance of TFS, I would say backup and restore is good option as you need your all data to be moved to new server.

Refer this link for detail process - http://blogs.msdn.com/b/bharry/archive/2010/08/18/backing-up-and-restoring-your-tfs-server.aspx

  • Hi Santosh,

    Thanks for your quick reply.

TFS 2010 is not upgraded. We have installed TFS 2012 in totally different VM and moved our team project there.

You mean to say just by migrating TFS 2010 database to 2012 we will get our test cases created in 2010 team project.

    Thanks and Regards,

    Priyanka

  • Hi,

I think back up the database is the good way. If you still have this issus, I think post it to http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/home?forum=tfsgeneral.

    Thanks

  • Hello. We also have an existing TFS 2010 installation on one virtual machine, with many projects and related test cases.  We created a TFS 2012 installation on another VM, running Windows Server 2012. I followed the instructions in Brian Harry's blog entry (referenced above by Vivek) to successfully back up the 2010 TFS.  The backups were written to a common network drive.

However, when I open the TFS Admin Console on the 2012 machine, and attempt to restore from that 2010 backup set into the new 2012 TFS, I first enter the same network path, hit Enter, but nothing appears in the "Select Backup Sets" field.

Is this because TFS 2012 cannot restore from a TFS 2010 backup?  What am I doing wrong?

    Thanks for your help!
