Missing DiagnosticsHubPackage (VS2015)

Question

• When loading visual studio 2015, I'm getting an error complaining the 'DiagnosticsHubPackage' package did not load correctly. When I look in the ActivityLog.xml, I see the following information:

<record>1094</record>
2015/08/10 14:42:50.800
<type>Error</type>
VisualStudio

SetSite failed for package [DiagnosticsHubPackage]

80070002

<errorinfo>Could not load file or assembly 'Microsoft.VisualStudio.ScriptedHost, Version=14.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b03f5f7f11d50a3a' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified.</errorinfo>

I checked the installation directly for Microsoft.VisualStudio.ScriptedHost.*, but could not find any files. I tried doing a repair install, but that had no impact. Any ideas how to get the diagnostics working? I had no issues at all running the CTP, however I just rebuilt my environment on Windows 10 and a fresh install of VS2015 pro and have had nothing but issues.

Has anyone else run into similar issues? What can I do to resolve this?

• Finally managed to get up and working again - a re-install and repair did not fix the problem for me. Posting here in case anyone else hitting the same problem.

I compared the files on a good VS 2015 machine with mine and found several missing files in the "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 14.0\Common7\IDE\PrivateAssemblies" directory:

c:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 14.0\Common7\IDE\PrivateAssemblies\en\Microsoft.VisualStudio.DesignTools.WindowsPhoneXamlDesigner.resources.dll
c:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 14.0\Common7\IDE\PrivateAssemblies\en\Microsoft.VisualStudio.ScriptedHost.resources.dll
c:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 14.0\Common7\IDE\PrivateAssemblies\ScriptedSandbox32.exe
c:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 14.0\Common7\IDE\PrivateAssemblies\Microsoft.VisualStudio.DesignTools.WindowsPhoneXamlDesigner.dll
c:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 14.0\Common7\IDE\PrivateAssemblies\Microsoft.VisualStudio.ScriptedHost.dll
c:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 14.0\Common7\IDE\PrivateAssemblies\Microsoft.VisualStudio.ServiceBus.Explorer.dll
c:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 14.0\Common7\IDE\PrivateAssemblies\Microsoft.VisualStudio.SmartDevice.NativeProjectSystem.Appx.dll
c:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 14.0\Common7\IDE\PrivateAssemblies\Microsoft.VisualStudio.WebClient.Diagnostics.Services.dll
c:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 14.0\Common7\IDE\PrivateAssemblies\plugin.vs.js
c:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 14.0\Common7\IDE\PrivateAssemblies\ScriptedHost.Blank.html
c:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 14.0\Common7\IDE\PrivateAssemblies\ScriptedSandbox.t.html
c:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 14.0\Common7\IDE\PrivateAssemblies\ScriptedSandbox64.exe
c:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 14.0\Common7\IDE\PrivateAssemblies\Microsoft.ServiceBus.Preview.dll

I copied those over and the Diagnostics window loaded, but failed with an error when I started debugging. The output window messages led me to the article below, which seems likely to be the cause behind the whole problem (upgrading to Windows 10 from earlier preview builds):

http://blogs.msdn.com/b/visualstudioalm/archive/2015/07/24/no-such-interface-supported-in-visual-studio-2015-on-windows-10.aspx

I followed the instructions to delete the files referenced in that article (although I needed to do some extra stuff to remove security on them so they could be deleted, and needed to stop the Visual Studio collector service). Diagnostic window now loads and runs fine!

• Hi Brosto,

To make sure whether you have installed this package correctly, please go to C:\Program Files (x86) or Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 14.0\Team Tools\DiagnosticsHub\1033, to check whether there is the DiagnosticsHubMsg.dll.

If there is not the DiagnosticsHubMsg.dll, it means that this package is installed incorrectly, please download the visual studio 2015 ISO from this page: https://www.visualstudio.com/en-us/downloads/download-visual-studio-vs.aspx

And then mount the ISO image, install the DiagnosticsHub_CORE package manually.

• Jiayi Li,

Thank you for the response. The DiagnosticsHubMsg.dll does exist in the location you mentioned. In fact, I already tried installing both the DiagnosticsHub_CORE package manually as well as DiagnosticsHub_CORECOLLECTION.

Please let me know if you have any other suggestions to resolve this issue.

Thanks,

Cory

• Hi Brosto,

To make sure whether it is related to your installation, could you provide your installation log files to us?

Please use http://aka.ms/vscollect to gather the installation logs. After using it, you will find vslogs.cab from %temp% folder. Please upload the file to https://skydrive.live.com/ and share the link here.

Besides, if you install from the web installer, I would suggest you install it from the ISO image, we could use FCIV.exe to make the package is not corrupted.

• Jiayi Li,

Here is a link to my install logs: vslogs.cab

My original install was from the ISO downloaded from MSDN. I verified the checksum value was correct.

It looks like the tool you pointed me to created logs for both VS2013 and VS2015.

Thanks,

Cory

• Hi Brosto,

Have your windows update to the latest?

Since installing visual studio requires your OS has been "patched" up - Update your computer (Windows).

To make sure whether your windows has updated to the latest, please go to Windows Update to check whether there is the update need to install.

If there is the windows update, please first install it.

Besides, try clearing Visual Studio Component Model Cache.

Just delete or rename this folder:
%AppData%\..\Local\Microsoft\VisualStudio\14.0\ComponentModelCache

• I've had some issues with some missing components of VS2015. I was previously speaking with someone on the Diagnostics forum, but they've suggested I come here to speak about the issue.

For full history, please see Diagnostics Forum Post

Here is the error I get when trying to debug a project, or by going to Debug -> Show Diagnostic Tools

<record>1094</record> 2015/08/10 14:42:50.800 <type>Error</type> VisualStudio
SetSite failed for package [DiagnosticsHubPackage]

80070002
<errorinfo>Could not load file or assembly 'Microsoft.VisualStudio.ScriptedHost, Version=14.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b03f5f7f11d50a3a' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified.</errorinfo>

My installation of VS2015 is on a fresh copy of Windows 10 RTM. I've confirmed the checksum was correct on the Visual Studio 2015 ISO.

Some various commands I've tried are:

• devenv /ResetSkipPkgs
• devenv /setup
• Repair Install VS2015
• Uninstall/Reinstall VS2015
• Collect (vscollect)  -> vslogs.cab

Please let me know if there are any additional things I can do to make VS2015 work properly.

Thanks!

Cory

• @Cory,

I merged your case together. They are the same.

To diagnose this issue I recommend you try process monitor tool:https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/Library/bb896645.aspx?f=255&MSPPError=-2147217396

It can list all files/registries related to a process. So you need to do the following:

1. Run process monitor

2. Open Visual Studio and try reproduce your problem.

3. Store process monitor, save logs

4. Filter logs by using processes, keep devenv process

5. Check for the time when you click to debug and check the file/registry access error.

You will find Visual Studio may trying to look for something in registry or some folders related to DiagnosticsHubPackage. I suspect we may need to manually modify something in order to make it works.

If you don't know which key to modify, you can send the process monitor log here and tell us when you click to reproduce the problem. We can help you check it.

Best regards,

Barry

• Barry,

Thanks for merging the topics together, that certainly helps keep it all contained and easy to reference for future users that may have the same problem.

Can you merge this one as well: Diagnostics Forum Post

I've gone ahead and ran the process monitor, however I don't see anything that necessarily catches my eye. I've uploaded a log file to my OneDrive, Logfile.PML.

According to the ActivityLog.xml, the problem starts around 13:34:42.534

I can see several issues attempting to find the file Microsoft.VisualStudio.ScriptedHost, but we already know this file does not exist for some reason. You're eyes are probably a bit more trained to look at this than mine, do you see anything else that catches your eyes?

• Hi Brosto,

I found the following registry key not found from your process monitor file:

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Fusion\PublisherPolicy\Default\v4.0_policy.14.0.Microsoft.VisualStudio.ScriptedHost__b03f5f7f11d50a3a

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Fusion\PublisherPolicy\Default\policy.14.0.Microsoft.Windows.Simulator.Client__b03f5f7f11d50a3a

Please try to create in the registry editor manually.

And then re-test this issue.

• Jiayi Li -

I wasn't sure what needed to go in those keys so I referenced my surface pro 3 which seems to run VS2015 without any of the problems my main workstation is having. Unfortunately those keys don't exist on my surface either.

While I'm happy to test that out, can you provide a .reg file with the properties that need to exist inside this registry key?

• Hi Brosto,

I re-checked these keys on my machine with visual studio 2015 installed, but I also couldn't find the registry keys, I try to involve some others here to check this issue for you. Thank you for your understanding.

• I have a fresh Windows 10 install (just bought it) and I am having this problem. No amount of repairing and reinstalling has been able to fix it. On my laptop, which I upgraded to Windows 10 from Windows 8.1, I haven't had any problems. That also previously had Visual Studio 2013 installed whereas my Desktop is a complete fresh install with only Visual Studio 2015 Community.

• I've tried every solution (proposed and otherwise) in this thread and can't rid myself of this error for the life of me. I get this error twice whenever I try to run/debug my web app. I'm on Windows 7 (in a domain environment, AFAIK all updates/patches applied)

Note: Not necessarily in order at this point, I've been working on this for two days (the un/reinstalls take an excruciatingly long time.)

• Un/reinstalled VS 2015 (reinstalled after also removing all associated programs installed that didn't get removed automatically.)
• Removed component cache folder
• devenv /clearcache
• devenv /updateconfiguration
• devenv /setup, as recommended here
• From an admin command prompt, l launched devenv /safemode, this doesn't display the error!
• Thought maybe admin profile had something my profile was missing, but it doesn't even have a "%AppData%\..\Local\Microsoft\VisualStudio\14.0\" folder
• Thought perhaps no folder for admin did the trick, renamed my profile folder and tried again, still same error
• Starting devenv /safemode from normal prompt (my user profile) also doesn't exhibit the error
• I tried adjusting the ownership/permissions on the file as this page recommended, but the file does not exist
• I downloaded/mounted ISO and tried installing the "DiagnosticsHub_CORE" and "DiagnosticsHub_CORECOLLECTION" packages. They seemed to install fine, but did not fix the error
• I started an explorer instance from admin console (happened to be in one) then right clicked on the "DiagnosticsHub_" packages and selected repair. The "DiagnosticsHub_CORE" package warned of a need to restart after (which I did)... still didn't fix the problem
• Haven't yet tried process monitor or log capture and upload (will wait until instructed to do so)
• I also do not have the registry key mentioned above, "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Fusion\PublisherPolicy\Default\v4.0_policy.14*"
• No working instance of VS15 to grab the files from as suggested
• Had other errors that I've since resolved that were similar in appearance (popup pointing to activity log)

Help please!

Friday, November 20, 2015 8:31 AM
• I just realized...

--------------------------- Microsoft Visual Studio --------------------------- The 'DiagnosticsHubPackage' package did not load correctly.

The problem may have been caused by a configuration change or by the

installation of another extension. You can get more information by

examining the file

'C:\Users\{USERNAME}\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\VisualStudio\14.0\ActivityLog.xml'.

Restarting Visual Studio could help resolve this issue.

Continue to show this error message? --------------------------- Yes No ---------------------------

Is the fact that it is storing that log file in "AppData\Roaming" at all problematic? I thought perhaps there was a "ComponentModelCache" folder in there that was the problem, but I found no such folder in "Roaming" to remove/rename.

I'm rdp'ing in to my office desktop via vpn (if that explains the "Roaming" aspect, or the issue as a whole.)

I just tried creating a new project to verify, and it exhibits the same behavior.

• For me, the VS2015 RTM worked just fine, but upon upgrading to Update 1 I am now having this issue. I've done an uninstall/reinstall and the ScriptedHost files are not installed. ActivityLog.xml still says 'SetSite failed for package [DiagnosticsHubPackage] Could not load file or assembly Microsoft.VisualStudio.ScriptedHost, version 14.0.0.0...'

I did manually re-install the DiagnosticsHub_CORE from the update 1 download. It installed just fine. Also tried the other DiagnosticHub packages and they installed fine. Still no diagnostic hub.

Also tried:

devenv /ResetSkipPkgs
devenv /setup

Running on Win10, but the upgrade was done before install of VS2015 RTM.

Now VS will load but I have this exact same issue. It also happens trying to load Cloud Explorer. I have this problem, too.

i go to C:\Program Files (x86) or Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 14.0\Team Tools\DiagnosticsHub\1033, directory and just rename DiagnosticsHubMsg.dll to another name.

for example : DiagnosticsHubMsg1.dll
