  • Because devenv is the whole darn IDE and it's a big fat beast that loads lots of dlls which has a significant memory footprint.

    Compare:   cl /?

    ...which is just the compiler.

    As Wyck said, the devenv is like an entrance to the VS, it load the many dlls of VS and system.

    Commonly, it doesn't take much time to the devenv command.

    How about trying the following steps to narrow down some potential causes:

    1. Disable anti-virus or anti-spyware software.
    2. Check windows update and make them patched up.
    3. Clear %TEMP% folder.
