Cannot install or uninstall .NET 3.5SP1

    Question

  • I tried to install Expression on my XP SP3 machine and it immediately failed with an error of "Microsoft Expression Setup has encountered a problem and needs to close.  We are sorry for the inconvenience."

So I thought I would try to remove .NET 3.5SP1 based on some blog posts I read. Trying to remove it (or reinstall it) went through loading the installation components, it brought me to the setup/license agreement screen, and I clicked install. After download complete, it started installing.  The progress bar went up, it went down, and eventually it finished and have a "Setup Error."

Any ideas? I have some development I need to do and I can't make progress right now.

  • Hi,

Just for your information .NET Framework 3.5 with SP1 includes .NET 2.0 with SP2 and .NET 3.0 with SP2 as prerequisite.

For cleaning up your failed or incomplete installations of .Net frameworks from your machine, use this Automated cleanup tool to remove the .NET Framework 1.0, 1.1, 2.0, 3.0 and 3.5 available at below link:

Let me know if it did the trick for you.

  • Hi Skipole,

Based on your description, it seems that you cannot install .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 on your machine.

For further troubleshooting, could you please help me to try the following steps?

    1. Download .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 (Full Package)
Note: You can try some download manager software to help downloading.

    2. Use Cleanup tool to clear the installation of .NET Framework 3.5 >> 3.0 >> 2.0 in order

    3. Run the installer to install .NET 3.5 SP1 with Administrator Privilege

    4. If any problem occurs during the installation, use Collect tool to collect the log files for further troubleshooting.

The steps to collect the log:
    - Try to clean your "%temp%" folder (Start Menu >> Run >> Type "%temp%")
    - Install .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 full package
    - Collect the logs from "%temp%" folder
       Collect tool: http://blogs.msdn.com/heaths/archive/2008/05/09/visual-studio-and-net-log-collection-utility.aspx
    - Send vslogs.cab file to me (v-yicche@microsoft.com)
Note: Please attach the link of this post in the mail.

Hope this helps! If you have any concern, please feel free to let me know.

  • Short version: I followed a combination of instructions and everything seems to be working now

    Longer version:

Thank you for your replies. This is what I did:

    • 1.       Killed the anti-virus software
    • 2.       Used the cleanup tool and removed the Frameworks one by one (from 3.5 down to 1.0). This included a reboot.
    • 3.       Looked in Add/Remove programs and it still showed .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 with hotfixes/updates KB958494, KB953595, and KB963707. It also still showed .NET Framework 1.0 Hotfix KB953295.
    • 4.       Tried to remove .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 and received an error of “This action is only valid for products that are currently installed.” After that point it no longer gave me an option to change/remove it.
    • 5.       Tried to remove the Framework 1.0 hotfix and was successful.  The same hotfix still showed up under 3.5 SP1 but it no longer offered an opportunity to change/remove it.
    • 6.       Tried to remove hotfix KB958494 and received the error of “This action is only valid for products that are currently installed.”
    • 7.       Tried to remove update KB963707 and received the error of “This action is only valid for products that are currently installed.”
    • 8.       Ran the full dotnetfx35.exe (with antivirus off) and rebooted.
    • 9.       Looked in Add/Remove programs and it showed Framework 2.0 SP2, Framework 3.0 SP2, Framework 3.5 SP1.

    10.   Everything seems to be working now

    Thank you for your help!
