Bootstrapper Manifest Generator no longer available RRS feed

  • Question

  • The last known location of the Bootstrapper Manifest Generator (BMG) was on the MSDN code archive, which has since been shut down.  Where is it hosted now?  The bootstrapper guide specifically references this tool.

  • Hi Innobsee,

I cannot find useful information about this BMG too. Do you want to do something publish stuff with this tool? If so, I would suggest you move to ClickOnce forum for effective response.

Feel free to let me know if there is any misunderstanding.

  • I'm using the Visual Studio Installer Projects extension to generate an installer.  I need to use the BMG to create a bootstrapper for a prerequisite msi.  This is not a ClickOnce project.  I plan to distribute a setup.exe and 2 msi files.

The entire point of an archive is to be a repository for old files that might otherwise be lost. What was the reason behind shutting down the archive? Do I need to download tools to my computer in case Microsoft decides to remove them on a whim?

To add to this, if a user is logged into MSDN and attempts to visit archive.msdn.microsoft.com, the page gets stuck in a redirect loop. The only way to visit the page is when you're logged out.

Couple things to note about the msdn forums:

    • Alerts are not working. I set one on this thread to get an email alert. Never received it.
    • New users cannot post links until they're "verified". The message doesn't say how to get verified.

  • Hi Innobsee,

Per my understanding, Visual studio extension is out of my support range. I would recommend you post your question on https://visualstudiogallery.msdn.microsoft.com/9abe329c-9bba-44a1-be59-0fbf6151054d for suggestions.

Additionally, thank you for reporting using forum experience. I use alerts too and it seems work well. Do you forget to do setting in profile?

Furthermore, you'll be verified automatically if you've contributed to the forum with recognitions(points, replies, and answers etc.) successfully since registered.

    I hope it helps.

  • The BMG is completely separate and unrelated to the Visual Studio Installer extension. I just happen to need a bootstrapper in my situation.  According to Microsoft's msdn pages, the BMG tool is the program to use. I'm simply looking for the official copy of BMG. I'm positive Microsoft wouldn't just deactivate an archive without providing an alternative source for it.

This page is where Microsoft recommends to use the BMG tool: https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms165429.aspx

The email alerts needed to be confirmed before they sent, which makes sense in hindsight.  They are working now.

  • I found the package here.  I downloaded it today and it was safe with no extras included.
