Team Explorer 2015 Fails for Visual Studio 2015 (Fatal Error) RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi

I am trying to install Visual Studio 2015 and During installation I get  Error Message "Team Explorer for Microsoft Visual Studio  2015" Fatal Error During installation.

I have checked  chkdsk command and no hard disk error found.  I have ran Installer from Web/ burning  ISO  and downloading all files in my  computer and running from there .   I am consistently getting above error.

Looking at log  it seems  that Visual Studio installer identifies that Team_Explorer is  missing and trying to install but it ends with Message"You must first  install Visual Studio  first before installing  Team Explorer"  Am I suppose to install   Team_Explorer before Visual Studion install?

Note: I am installing Visual Studio with customized option with only  Python option selected.

Here is log entries which has Team_Explorer in message

  • Hi ramwave,

Thank you for posting in MSDN forum.

Firstly, please tell us your VS 2015 edition (community, premium or enterprise).

From the error message you offered, Failed to execute vs_teamExplorerCore MSI package. I suspect the installation package is corrupt.

For your issue, here are my suggestions:

1.Downlad the ISO and verify the ISO checksum first, you can find download link from official site.

2.You can use fciv.exe tool http://support.microsoft.com/kb/841290 to manually verify your iso checksum. With this action you will be able to know if the installer is corrupt or not.

Before the VS installation, there are some tips:

1.Ensure you are admin when installing and AV software disabled.

    2. Your OS has registry error, this may due to corrupt OS and you need to repair or reinstall.

    3. Check your privilege and run the setup as admin

Besides, It is hard to say if it is a OS issue. Maybe we need more logs to analyze, please use  http://aka.ms/vscollect   to gather the installation logs. After using it, you will find vslogs.cab from %temp% folder. Please upload the file to https://skydrive.live.com/   and share the link here.

    Best Regards,

    Wen Xu

  • I've been having the same problem. I was able to use the collect tool to get this file: http://1drv.ms/1PTkhmu.

I have tried uninstalling and installing VS2015 Community close to 10 times. I have administrative privileges, made sure Windows was up to date, have done ISO and Web installs, tried community and professional, removed files from the Package Cache, deleted registry entries, just about everything mentioned anywhere. Here are my steps today:

    1. Tried installing VS2013 update 5. That didn't work because I had uninstalled VS2013.
    2. Installed VS2013 professional from ISO.
    3. Installed VS2013 update 5 from web.
    4. Installed VS2015 Community from web. It failed.
    5. Removed Package cache files.
    6. Tried installing VS2015 Community from web again. Still failed.

My original problem was I couldn't update any extensions in VS2015 that didn't have their own installer. I thought I was done with VS2013 so I had uninstalled it. With this extension issue, I thought I would repair the installation of VS20215. That did not fix the problem so I uninstalled it thinking I would be able to reinstall it. Using the same web installer I originally used, I got the fatal error during Team Explorer when trying to install VS2015 Community.

  • +1 for uninstalling Visual Studio and then trying to resintall on Windows 10. I'm getting the same error about Team Explorer failing to install.

  • I am getting the same error. I have reported this on Connect a week back and am awaiting a response.

Perhaps if we all say "Me too" on all the reports, someone will pay attention...

  • I've had the same problem today. Really delaying my environment setup. I've commented on that connect post you made in the hope that it gets picked up.

At this point I may have to wipe or restore.

Here's a link to a similar thread from a few months ago:

    https://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/vstudio/en-US/4acee791-4c62-45cd-a96c-548735490e91/visual-studio-community-2015-install-fail?forum=vssetup

Reformatted my harddrive, installed Win10 again and then the installation worked. But only for two weeks, then it broke. And now I am getting the same error when trying to repair or re-install.

No difference if I use the SHA verified ISO-file or the Web-installer.

Have also tried reinstalling the vc_redistributables as suggested in this StackOverflow thread, did not help:

How did your visual studio break? Did it simply close as it started up? This problem is apparently coming quite common.

  • How did your visual studio break? Did it simply close as it started up? This problem is apparently coming quite common.

I am not entirely sure. It broke either by the huge November update of Windows 10. Another possibility was during the install of cppcheck 1.71 x64 which apparently contained a 32-bit binary (which now is replaced with the correct binary).

I did not start VS until after those two events. But then Visual Studio refused to start and showed the same error message as if you try to start the devenv after a failed installation attempt.

  • This user have the same problem after installing the 1511 update to Windows 10. So my guess is that this is the update which breaks VS:

  • I have same problem and cannot find any solution to resolve the issue. it seems need do something in the OS to fix the system files.

If you have tried the proposed solution in the StackOverflow thread (linked above) and that did not help you can try to do the following:

Manually remove all traces of VS2015 by using msiinv to get a list of all msi installs, then using msiexec -x {product code} on everything that is associated with VS2015 and then try to reinstall.

  • I had this exact same issue and found a working fix. Well after i compared the SHA-1 and found it was correct, even tho the suggested error said that the ISO  might have been damaged or so... i was kinda blowing my brains there and found that the actual ISO is... not working the way it should while installing the whole thing! and the most horrific part so it messes itself. Not even the microsoft support seemed "very" helpful. Found that the issue was caused because the iso... it was installing the >>>> vcruntime140.dll <<<< on the wrong folder. the x86 version folder at the x64 version folder and vice-versa.

  • I had this same issue, and tried a number of different attempts to get VS re-installed. What finally worked was to remove all of the following folders under appdata\local\microsoft:

    VSCommon

    VisualStudio

    Blend

    VsGraphics

    ApplicationInsights

    vshub

    Team Foundation

    Web Platform Installer

    MsBuild

All except the first 5 are almost certainly irrelevant for the fix, and I'm pretty sure it was one of the first two that did the job. This was not entirely random: I watched the install failing with Process Explorer and caught it (VSIXinstaller or whatever it's called) looking in at least one of these folders appdata\local\microsoft (though I don't recall which one, I had been trying to get this working for a week so I was a bit aggressive...)

  • I downloaded and installed the Visual C++ 32-bit redistributable for Visual Studio 2015 from this site:

    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=48145

This seemed to fix my issue.   I had the same problem where the install failed installing Team Explorer and the above install fixed my issue.

  • +1

I had a working VS 2015 Update 1 installation and made the mistake of upgrading to Update 2 and all hell broke loose. Now Team Explorer fails to install and I have a whole lot of issues with installing ConnectedServices. I've tried to uninstall, reinstall, install vscredist manually, force uninstall, nothing seems to be working for me.

I had installed Update 1 before W10 1511, while now I'm on Insider build 14322, maybe there is indeed something wrong with the OS releases after 1511.

Update: This is the error in the install log, there are similar errors for the ConnectedServices packages:

  • I am experiencing the same fatal error. I have tried all the above remedies to no avail.

I have also taken the "Microsoft survey"

It is a good thing I was only using the install for academia. My 2012 version that I do .NET development with to support a production environment has thankfully not been effected. I sure hope Microsoft gets it together here............

  • I am having the same issues with VS 2015 Update 3.

    1. Visual Studio 2015 was acting crazy, crashing all the time.
    2. Unintsalled VS 2015.
    3. Tried to reinstall, and boom !!!! 3 + days of total frustration.

I have followed all the suggestions short of reinstalling the OS. Company SCCM tried to install Windows 10 remotely and failed some time ago, but I have been working for about a month this way. Maybe something caught up with me.

I went through every possible blog to get 2015 installed and had days of discontent, but removing the above directories and performing a repair worked for me. • Ty by the help, I was trying to install VS in a new computer for 3 frustrating weeks and I always had these problem with Team Explores install, both, with the ISO and installing from the internet, but installing first "Visual C++ redistributable" the problems is gone.

I'm sad because the problem is know since more then 1 year (10/17/2015) and we still have this problem, Microsoft know this but did nothing to fix it in the new versions.

  • I have the same problem too. I have noticed that I can use the same ISO to install other versions on older versions of windows and it works fine, win 7, win 8 and win 10.  I just have the issue when I try to install it on Windows 10 anniversary.

I did get around it by installing an older version of wind 10. Then install   visual studio then upgrade to windows a0 anniversary.

    Extract TotalUninstaller.zip
    1. Open an administrator command prompt.
    2. Execute Setup.ForcedUninstall.exe
    3. Type 'Y' to uninstall.

    right-click Setup.ForcedUninstall.exe

    select: run as administrator

    in command prompt type Y

    reboot computer

    Install VS2015

    right-click setup, run as administrator

but this directory under C:\ProgramData\Package Cache does not exist. Could it be that the file is missing from the iso?

  • eff me, this worked:

Taking inspiration from posters above, I did this and it worked:

    1. Do Windows Updates

    2. Run VS2015 uninstaller.

    3. Clean %TEMP%

    4. Uninstall Microsoft Visual Studio 2015 Shell (Isolated) (not sure the name) as well as anything with 2015 in the name.

    5. Exit Malwarebytes, switch Virus & threat protection real-time protection off.

    6. Extract all the files on the ISO to the hard drive.

    7. Swap the 2 file names in /packages/vcRedistD14, swapping the 64 bit and 32 bit file names.

    8. Run installer, custom, leave it as is and proceed with the install.

Probably did too much, not sure which steps did it.  My bet is on step 4...
