How to disable automatic updates in VS 2017? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I want to retain Visual Studio Enterprise 2017 version 15.4.27.  However, automatic updates keep replacing that with the latest version, 15.5.27.  How can I disable auto updates?

  • Hi,

    Welcome to MSDN forum.

visual studio 2017 usually can be updated through the following ways:

    • Update by using the Notifications hub
    • Update by using the Visual Studio Installer

    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/visualstudio/install/update-visual-studio

    >>However, automatic updates keep replacing that with the latest version, 15.5.27.  How can I disable auto updates? If you don't update visual studio 2017 via the ways above, please check if someone else use the same vs2017 with you.

Besides, you can disable visual studio to get update in Tools | Options | Environment | Extensions and Updates

    Best regards,

    Joyce

  • Thanks, Joyce. But those settings (Tools | Options | Environment | Extensions and Updates) only seem to apply to extensions, not to the VS 2017 application itself.  I don't share my workstation with anyone.

The only solution I've found so far is to shut down my machine between uses of VS, so that whatever is causing the auto-updates doesn't have a chance to work.

  • Hi,

If you disable the setting in Tools | Options | Environment | Extensions and Updates which will also stop to acquire the update for visual studio.

As far as I know, visual studio need to be updated manually via the ways I post in the previous reply. Have you set or install some software to make app always up-to-date in your pc?

    Best regards,

    Joyce

    vsregedit.exe set "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio\2017\Enterprise" HKCU ExtensionManager AutomaticallyCheckForUpdates2Override dword 0
