Windows SDK v6.0a ResGen depends on Microsoft.VisualC.CppCodeProvider version RRS feed

  • Question

  • UPDATE: I cannot reproduce this issue on a fresh install - I must have had a corrupted system.

    Visual Studio 2008 installs the Windows SDK v6.0a. The included ResGen.exe depends on Microsoft.VisualC.CppCodeProvider version which is not installed with Visual Studio 2008. This causes strongly-typed resource assembly generation to fail when C++ is specified as the language.
    Attempt to generate a strong-typed resource assembly using a commandline like
    resgen MessageStrings.en.resx ProjectName.MessageStrings.resources /publicClass /str:c++,ProjectName,MessageStrings,MessageStrings.h

    The following error is reported

    ResGen(0,0): error RG0000: Error while writing the output file "Release\LocalizedStrings.MessageStrings.en.resources"
    ResGen(0,0): error RG0000: Specific exception: "ConfigurationErrorsException" Message: "The CodeDom provider type "Microsoft.VisualC.CppCodeProvider, CppCodeProvider, Version=, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b03f5f7f11d50a3a" could not be located."
