Storing and retreiving password securely. RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello all,

I'm developing a small application that simply connects to a remote MySQL database, and displays information within a Data Grid View.

The problem I am facing, as per the title of the post is I'd like to come up with some way to store the database password so the user only needs to enter it once when they first install the program. The password will be changed every 30 days requiring the user to re-enter the password, which isn't a problem. The part im finding it hard to get my head round is storing the DB password so it can't be read, yet, is sent in regular tex (via SSL) to the DB server.

I've searched the forums and Google, so please, no lmgtfy.com links ;) - The answers i've found talk about encrypting passwords and using a salt, but none seem to fit with my scenario, which i was surprised at.

I'd be really grateful for any help you guys can provide, and my sincere apologies for the newbishness of this question.

    Kind Regards,

    Dave
