TFS and Team Explorer 101

  • We are using TFS and Team Explorer but we are novice users.

Are there any good resources for getting up to speed on TFS and Team Explorer and Source Control Explorer? Books...good web sites...YouTube videos...

We want to fully utilize Team Explorer and TFS as a Source librarian and use it efficiently.

Our vision is to have separate folders for different entities and then under each of those entities the following folders:

    • Dev
    • Test
    • UAT
    • Prod

So is there any way to promote from Dev to Test and then from Test to UAT or is it pretty much a manual exercise?

Things like that...that's what we'd like to know. The most efficient means to utilize TFS and Team Explorer and Source Control Explorer.

Thanks for your review and am hopeful for a reply.

  • Hi ITBobbyP,

    Thanks for posting here.

According to your description, I suggest that you could use the Git source control in TFS, and you said you want to “promote from Dev to Test and then from Test to UAT”, you could consider to use the branch feature in VSTS, branch could isolate your changes to achieve your goal. For more information about the workflow in the Git branches, you could refer to this link.

Besides, this forum is about the Visual Studio IDE, as your issue is more related to the TFS, if above answer not resolve you question, you can open a new thread on stackoverflow with TFS tag.

    Thanks for your understanding
