Error Installing Update for Microsoft Visual Studio 2015 Update 3 (KB3165756)

    Question

  • The installer first fails when it cannot locate Preparation.exe. I manually searched for the file but none of the versions that I could find matched what the installer was looking for and rejected each of them by refusing to advance to main dialog where the installation would continue. Selecting Download... also failed, each time returning to dialog asking me to enter the correct location of the file. I eventually had to cancel the instalation. The results were: 0 components were installed.

I cannot find any hits that lend any adive or insight, so I am hoping someone here has had success with this update.

    Thanks in advance.

  • Thank you. I did try the layout command, but as it turns out, that wasn't the real problem.

I have since discovered that our Internet provider (one of our state agencies) is blocking certain IP addresses and many of these IP addresses are used by the Microsoft installers. If I retry the Download... option enough times, it eventually works.

It would be nice if we could get the range of IPs that are being used by Microsoft so we could request a blanket rule to allow traffic through them.

    Thanks

  • Dear Mike,

    Thank you for your update.

    >>It would be nice if we could get the range of IPs that are being used by Microsoft so we could request a blanket rule to allow traffic through them.

You can have a try with whitelist the following list to unblock all sign-in scenarios in Visual Studio:

      • *.windows.net
      • *.microsoftonline.com
      • *.visualstudio.com
      • *.microsoft.com
      • *.live.com

What's more, please see here: https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/mt752379.aspx?f=255&MSPPError=-2147217396

After that, this issue still persists. I need your help to the VS installation log. Please use http://aka.ms/vscollect to gather the installation logs. After using it, you will find vslogs.zip under %temp% folder. Please upload the file to https://onedrive.live.com/ and share the link here.

    Best regards,

    Sara

  • Hi Mike,

    Thank you for your post.

When you do the VS setup, you need to follow the following tips:

    http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en/vssetup/thread/60f71a54-506e-4c70-be98-e993ce6d1ddf

Please run the VS installer as administrator.

    >> I eventually had to cancel the installation

If you cancel the installation half way, it may cause that the install packages are missing or corrupted.

So I suggest you download the ISO, verify the SHA-1 to ensure the ISO is not corrupt, then install locally.

VS 2015 iso Microsoft official download link:

    https://www.visualstudio.com/en-us/downloads/download-visual-studio-vs.aspx

VS 2015 iso files SHA-1 Values link:

    https://www.visualstudio.com/en-us/downloads/visual-studio-2015-iso-sha1-vs.aspx

PS: To make sure whether your package is corrupted or not,

please use FCIV.exe http://support.microsoft.com/kb/841290  to verify hash of the ISO.

    Best Regards,

  • Thanks for the reply.

However, I am not running the VS Setup. I am running a small update to Update 3. It does not come as an ISO image, only a web installer. See https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/mt752379.aspx.

I had to cancel the setup of the update because it would not continue. Period. There is a cancel button. I clicked it. The setup ended. No big deal.

  • Hi Mike,

If you really would like to install the VS update 3, you could download Visual Studio Update 3, then run this setup.exe, to apply it to your original VS.

    Please refer to:

  • Please take your time when reading my posts.

Again, I am not having trouble with VS 2015 Update 3.

There is an update that was released AFTER Update 3 (KB3165756) that I am trying to install. It does not come as an ISO image. It is a web installer. It is NOT Update 3. Update 3 is installed already.

So, unless Update 3 has been modified to INCLUDE the KB3165756 update, I am not reinstalling Update 3.

If you have some relevant information about KB3165756, please post it at your convenience.

    Thank you

  • Hi Mike,

I'm sorry for misunderstanding you question before. It's a update bug fix for Update 3.

If you would like to install it , I suggest you use /layout command for the tools offline installation.

It allows you to download the full set of files to a local folder, and this folder has all the necessary files for offline installation.
On other PCs, you could try the following steps:
    1.Run the following command at a command prompt: <executable name> /layout.
This command downloads all the packages for the installation.
2.After you run the command, you should be prompted for the download location. Enter the location, and then choose Download.
3.When the package download is successful,  All specified components have been acquired successfully.
In the file location that you specified, find the executable file and the package folder. This is everything you need to copy to a shared location or install media.
You can now run the installation from the file location or the install media.
