upgrading to TFS 2017 (SQL Server 2014) from a TFS 2015 (SQL Server 2012)

  • I am upgrading to TFS 2017 (SQL Server 2014) from a TFS 2015 (SQL Server 2012). I did install and configure TFS 2017 on the new box. Can I use the TFS backup and restore tool to restore database backup from TFS2015 box to TFS2017 box? Or do I need to unconfigure TFS 2017 ?

  • Hi!

In my opinion upgrade path: Install 2015 on new hardware, import backups and then upgrade to 2017. TFS moving has its own steps: Move or Clone Team Foundation Server from one hardware to another

  • Yes, you need to unconfigure it, and follow Alexandrs upgrade path.

  • Hi san,

    Thank you for posting here.

Please refer to this article for the upgrading, it including In-Place Upgrade and Migration based upgrade.

If you want to back up the team projects, you just need to move the collection from TFS 2015 to TFS 2017.

    Summary steps should like this:

    1. Detach the collection
    2. Back up the collection database
    3. Move the collection database
    4. Attach the collection
    5. Configure the moved team project collection
    6. Configure projects

Please refer to Move a team project collection for details.

    Best Regards.
