"Illegal Characters In Path" error when deploying from SSDT to SharePoint 2013 RRS feed

  • Question

  • This is very frustrating since the error is useless. Why does it not tell me what the illegal characters are? Or show me what path it is trying to use?

I can deploy to a folder named ADT with reports with longer names than another folder named BHPSA that has shorter report names just fine. How do I debug this? Please help.

I do not need instructions on how to set the report server paths. Because I use the same path for the one that is broke that I use for the one that works.

I am poured over the ULS logs and I don't see that error. So it must be generated from VS before it even gets to SP. I have been running procmon and procexplorer and do not see anything. My latest step is to redirect the system variables to another locations. I hope after a reboot that by some miracle this project deploys.

My SharePoint version is 2013. SQL Server is 2012. The Target ServerVersion in the project says SQL Server 2008 or later.

The only thing that looks different is the first line in my reports related to schemas

    This report fails
    <Report xmlns="" xmlns:rd="">

    This one deploys

    Report xmlns:rd="" xmlns:cl="" xmlns="">

What does this information message mean?

Message 2 Could not find schema information for the element ''. O:\SharePoint 2013 Report Library\ADT\ADTDashboard.rdl 8 8 ADT

  • Hi,

Your issue can be caused by the schem information is not correct.

Did you report which failed to depoy to Sharepoint can preveiw successfully in designer?

Please try to change the scheme of the failed rdl to be the same as the one which works fine:
    Report xmlns:rd="" xmlns:cl="" xmlns="">

I recommend you to redesigne the report which faild to deploy.

  • It works fine in the designer. What I am doing is migrating these reports to a new server. So I downloaded all the reports from the existing SharePoint folder, added them to a project, tested them with the new datasource and was going to redeploy them.

So you are saying I can remove the XML for 2010 and put the 2008 XML header in the file?
