Problems when upgrade from SQL server 2008 SP1 to SQL 2008 R2 SP1 RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

We have experienced a some problmes when upgrade from SQL server 2008 sp1 to SQL R2. Sometimes we have detected that after finishing the installation process, only any component related to R2 is displayed in control panel (Microsoft SQL server 2008 R2 and Microsoft SQL server 2008 R2 setup [English]).

After that,we have found that even uninstalling it. its not possible to reinstallSQL R2 again.

Also we have found another similar case when only two components have been installed (microsoft SQL server 2008 R2 setup and sql server 2008 R2)

Component (microsoft SQL server 2008 R2 Native client)is missed and installation is not complete. In tyhat case, Uninstallation cannot be performed(different error messages are displayed) and therefore a new installation neither can be executed.

Our question is how can we proceed in that case? is there availabe any uninstaller for SQL server R2 and/or SQL 2008 sp1? or in last term, is there any procedure to be sure that uninstallation has been successfully completed?

We have tried uninstalling and repairing the setup but it always prompt with an error "No features were uninstalled during the setup execution. the requested features nmay not be installed. please review the summary.txt logs for further details"

we tried with the command line uninstallation as well, but the same error.

we tried repairing with the support tools installed but no success. :(

we even tried uninstalling through the registry..but no success.. :(

Could any one guide us how could we perform uninstallation of SQL and later installation of SQL 2008 R2 SP1. :)

    Thanks ,

    Pralhad

  • Hi Pralhad Bhatt,

    >> Sql Server 2008  Express Edition 10.1.2531.0

Regarding to your summary.txt seems the version of SQL Server 2008 is incorrect. Normally the version number of SQL Server 2008 SP1 should be 10.00.2531. Please run select @@version to verify.

As you mentioned, seems you tired to upgrade SQL Server 2008 express SP1 to SQL Server 2008 express R2 SP1. You can upgrade SQL Server 2008 SP1 to SQL Server R2 express TRM first, and then apply SP1 from here.

For Version and Edition Upgrades . supported to upgrade to SQL Server 2008 R2 express please refer to here

Meanwhile here's the redistribution license agreement for SQL Server 2008 R2 Express.

    >> Exception type: Microsoft.SqlServer.Setup.Chainer.Workflow.NoopWorkflowException
Message:  No feature were uninstalled during the setup execution. The requested features may not be installed. Please review the summary.txt logs for further details.

According to the error message, you can try to uninstall SQL Server 2008 Express using the means mentioned in the following article or you can following steps:
    1. Uninstall the existing SQL Server 2008 and all the components from the control panel. Remember to backup the user databases if any before uninstalling SQL Server.
    2. Backup the registry.
    3. Delete the following keys in regedit:
    --HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server
    --HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MSSQLServer
    4. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall and delete all the sub-keys referencing SQL Server.
    5. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services and delete all the keys referencing SQL Server.
    6. Rename all the SQL Server folders in the computer.
    7. Download and install Windows Cleanup Utility. Run the utility and remove any SQL Server components that you find.
    8. Reboot the machine

If you have any other problem, please let me know and share SQL error log for further troubleshooting.

  • Hello Pralhad,

I think you had tried to upgraded to SQL 2008 R2 Experss Edition from SQL Server 2008 R2 Enterprise evaluation editon.

If you want to install SQL Server 2008 R2 Express Edition, you can install it as a named instance.

Try to restart the server, and verify if you can connect to the instance.

  • Hello Sudeepta,

    Thanks for the reply..

I tried upgrade from SQL Server 2008 SP1 Express edition to SQL server 2008 R2 SP1 Express. DUring the upgrade process the installation fails and I am niether able to uninstall it nor able to repair it.

I am not able to connect to the SQL Instance.

the only option which remains with me is to reimage the machine and do the installation again. This was the better if only one or two machines effected, but I have around 20-30 machines with the same scenario..how do I go about it?

    Please assist.

    Awaitng your response.
