Linked Server error RRS feed

  • Question

  • On SQL Server 2008 instance, create a linked server to SQL Server 2000(RemoteServer), then map login. After that see all table list from RemoteServer in Management studio.
But When I run a query like
    select * from RemoteServer.myDB.dbo.myTable

    I got following error:

OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI10" for linked server "RemoteServer" returned message "Unspecified error".
OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI10" for linked server "RemoteServer" returned message "The stored procedure required to complete this operation could not be found on the server. Please contact your system administrator.".
    Msg 7311, Level 16, State 2, Line 1
Cannot obtain the schema rowset "DBSCHEMA_TABLES_INFO" for OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI10" for linked server "RemoteServer". The provider supports the interface, but returns a failure code when it is used.

But if I did same thing on  sql server 2000 instance, add linked server to RemoteServer, I can exchange data with SQL from RemoteServer.
    How to fix it?

  • have you install SP4 for sql 2000? if u have not or your sql 2000 installation with SP 3 try to run file instcat.sql which is located in folder install SP4 SQL 2000. Run the script in sql 2000 installation. I hope this will solve your problem
