obtain ConfigurationFile.ini from existing instance RRS feed

  • Question

  • Anybody knows how to obtain the configuration.ini for an existing instance?

Articles on how to install from a config file all contains the following:

    1. e:\setup.exe /UIMODE=Normal /ACTION=INSTALL
    2. follow the wizard up to ready to install
    3. cancel and get the ini file

The step 2 does not work.  When installing, we have the choice to add features or install a new instance.  when selecting a new instance, we obtain an ini file for the instance we would create.  When selecting the existing instance, we get the message stating new features must be added.

Anybody knows exactly what to do at step 2 to obtain a configuration file from an existing sql server instance?

  • hi,

you can get the configuration file from this location:

    C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\140\Setup Bootstrap\Log\20171225_150124

    140: depend on sql version

    20171225: installation date

  • hi there,

you did not mention your sql server version. follow the link.

below configuration path you need to keep in mind two things. number and the timestamp folder.

    the default location as follows.

    C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\{SQL server compatibility level}\Setup Bootstrap\Log\ {folder name that contain your last executed date time} \ ConfigurationFile.ini

    good luck
