  • Question

  • Hi,

I have two sql istance an SQL08\S to the other SQL08\T.

FromT I created a linked server on S. Now I want to create a linked server from S to S itself. I tried to enter from the dialog box at linked server : "S" or  "." (dot) . but I receive always a error message.

    1° Attempt

    linked server  .

    Server Type : SQL Server

Under Security : Be Made using login's current security context.

    i have:

Named Pipes Provider: Could not open a connection to SQL Server [2].
OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI10" for linked server "." returned message "Login timeout expired".
OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI10" for linked server "." returned message "A network-related or instance-specific error has occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. Server is not found or not accessible. Check if instance name is correct and if SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. For more information see SQL Server Books Online.". (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 2)

    2° Attempt

    linked server  SQL

    Server Type :  SQL08\S

Under Security : Be Made using login's current security context.

    i have:

You cannot create a local SQL Server as a linked server.

Can anyone help me ? I am using sql server 10:50 (2008 R2)

    Thanks :)

  • Why you want to create a linked server to the local server itself?

may be you could try creating the linked using T-SQL queries.
