To Pagefile or not X64 Win2K3 & SQL2005 X64 RRS feed

  • General discussion

  • We have some AMD x64 servers running Windows Server 2003 Enterprise x64 and SQL Server 2005 Enterprise x64. We have heard conflicting advice on setting the page file size when using x64 Operating systems particularly when servers have a large amount of memory (32GB and above). While some talk of using the old school advice on RAM * 1.5 others talk of setting a minimal page file size. Is there a new best practice sighting the reasoning that high amounts of physical memory on this platform offsets the need for paging.

  • There is, and Microsoft provides very detailed instructions for how to determine what the pagefile should be for your system when running on x64:

As far as "not" (the title of your post)... I wouldn't advise it.  We tried this on a couple of hour high memory dev sql servers.  They ran great for a while, but at some point they always crashed horribly or did strange things.
