SQL Server Runtime Version RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,
I am using SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition along with VB 2005 to develop a windows based financial application.
When I am ready to deploy the application, I will need a runtime version of SQL correct?
Essentially, I want users to be able to download one packaged file that uncompresses and installs the application on their PC.
The users should not need to have SQL, Visual Studio, etc to be able to use the application.

  • Hi Natrov,

Question : "When I am ready to deploy the application, I will need a runtime version of SQL correct?"

It's depend how you design your application.
    - SQL Server can be host on a remote server and all your users will be able to connect on this remote SQL server.
    - Or your can embedded a SQL Server Express with your application (more information http://blogs.technet.com/mdegre/archive/2009/09/11/sql-server-express-2008.aspx).

  • Hi Degremont,

    Thanks for the reply.

My thought process was to design a financial application for home users something along the lines of MS Money or Quicken but smaller with a different style budget than what those programs have.  How are those applications designed?  They would need a database built in to them to store all the data correct?
I might be off in my thinking of application deveopment and would like some clarification on this.  I have never built any apps and am also studying to take the 70-431 SQL server 2005 exam.

  • ok, I see.

In this case you can use SQL Express or SQL CE (in this case, SQL will be not a service)

    Cheers,
    Michel
