a silly question! RRS feed

  • Question

  • What is the function of SQL Server Manager Studio Express?

    Create Database and tables?

It seems that Visual Studio is already including the functions.

We can create database and table in Visual Studio 2005.

I am a new to SQL, sorry for the silly question.

  • You can install SQL Server Express without installing Visual Studio. In those cases, you'd use Manager Studio Express to manage the databases.

Well in common, but not technically, the VS tool is a stripped down UI of SQL Server Management Studio. You are only able to manage database not the whole instance including server principals, etc.

  • It allows you very quickly and very easily to manage your SQL Server databases and run tasks on them like scripts and so on.

  • SSMSE is not an management application that is built just for Visual Studio.

SQL Server 2005 has various versions and SQL Server 2005 Express Edition is one of them and users who want to manage SQL Server using an interface, use SSMSE to manage it. Besides, this is a free-to-use tool.

We are able to manage other Editions of SQL Server with this tool, however SSMSE a limited version of SSMS which ships with Standard, Developer and Enterprise Editions of SQL Server 2005.

Just to state that clear, SSMSE is not the version which ships with SQL Server Std,Dev, EE. SSME is only shipped with the Express edition or can be downloaded separately.
