Problem with Windows-integrated Authentication in SSRS 2016 after Upgrade from 2014 RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello everybody,

on my development box, there was SQL Server 2014 Developer Edition running, including Reporting Services. We use Windows applications to display reports with Windows-integrated authentication. Reporting Services and Database Services are both running on the same machine. We had not configured Kerberos Authentication but use NTLM. Database and Reporting Services both did run under the same locally created account. The operating system is Windows 10 Enterprise. Everything worked just fine.

After upgrading to SQL Server 2016 Developer Edition today (without any error messages or warnings), at first, the reporting web services and web portal was not reachable at all. Reporting Services Configuration did not show any errors. I could open the portal after I had configured the Reporting Services on my box to run under a new domain account which is also member in the "Pre-Windows 2000 Compatible Access" and "Windows Authorization Access Group" domain groups.

However, still no reports using Windows-integrated reporting work. In rsreportserver.config, there is only <RSWindowsNTLM/> in the <AuthenticationTypes> section. I have created a test data source using the RS portal for Microsoft SQL Server with connection string "Server=.;Database=DBName;Trusted_Connection=yes" and logon configred for "the user which executes the report". Neither in Edge nor in IE nor in our applications the reports work. Testing the connection gives the error that the database could not be opened, and there was an error authenticating as *the RS service domain account*!

Why does RS try to authenticate as its own service account instead of "my" current Windows account, as I wanted and as needed for Windows-integrated access from the application through Reporting Services down to the SQL Server database?

  • Hi Stefan,

In Reporting Services, to use Windows security, the below requirements need to meet:

    • The Web.config files for the Report Server Web service and Report Manager must include the <authentication mode="Windows"> setting
    • The Web.config files for the Report Server Web service and Report Manager must have <identity impersonate= "true" />.

So please make sure all these settings are correct. For more information, please refer to this article: Configure Windows Authentication on the Report Server.

Also please check the Reporting Services error log (default location: %programfiles%\Microsoft SQL Server\<SQL Server Instance>\Reporting Services\LogFiles) around the time that the error message thrown out. Please post the detail error log for our analysis if possible.

If you have any question, please feel free to ask.

    Best Regards,
    Qiuyun Yu

  • Hello Qiuyun,

Thank you for your prompt response. I would say that everything in both .config files should be correct. I have zipped both files and made that available under http://www.ct-systeme.com/LargeDownloads/rs-config-files.zip.

(I have nothing to do with TERADATA here).

Also, if possible, I would prefer having the service account for RS be a local or built-in account instead of a domain account. As I understood, this is, however, not possible with RS 2016 (or is it?).

  • Hi Stefan,

The error message in log files is translated to "ERROR: Throwing Microsoft.ReportingServices.ReportProcessing.ReportProcessingException:, Microsoft.ReportingServices.ReportProcessing.ReportProcessingException: no connection to the test data source can be made. ---> System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: the SFParts database requested by the application cannot be opened. Login failed.
    Login failed for user "CT-ETT\Sys-SSRS2016-SF-NB02"."

So in your scenario, is the current Windows account "CT-ETT\Sys-SSRS2016-SF-NB02"? Can you make sure this account has permission to access SFParts database?

In addition, we can also configure service account as built-in account. See:

  • Hello Qiuyun,

    Thank you again.

The CT-ETT\... account is exactly the problem, I guess. This is the service account I had created for RS. My own account, CT-ETT\Stefan, would be expected here, and I wonder why RS tries to go to the database using its own service account instead of the account of the user requesting the report, despite the fact that the data source is configured to authenticate as "the user who is displaying the report" ("Als Benutzer, der den Bericht anzeigt" in the german UI).

  • Hi Stefan,

Currently, it's hard for forum support to go further. For this issue, I would suggest you open a case with Microsoft Customer Support Services (CSS) (http://support.microsoft.com), so that a dedicated Support Professional can assist you in a more efficient manner.

  • Hello Qiuyun,

Thanks for trying anyway. I will open a case (and hopefully not forget to post the results here).
