Installing SP3 and 4 to SQL 2005 seems successful but does not update the version

    Question

  • I've been searching for an answer to this for days. I've seen some similar issues but none that directly reflect my problem. I have one instance of SQL server 2005 SP2 on a Windows 2003 Server Sp2 32 bit system. I've tried to install both SP3 and SP4 from Windows Update and manually from downloaded files. In every case the install completes succesfully. No reboot is requested but I rebooted anyway. I see this in the event viewer:

    Successful Install message in EventViewer

However, when I open SQL and launch this query

SELECT SERVERPROPERTY('productversion'), SERVERPROPERTY ('productlevel'), SERVERPROPERTY ('edition')
it returns: 9.00.3073.00 SP2 Standard Edition

When I check Add remove programs SP3 and SP4 are not listed. As a matter of fact I don't see any updates newer than 10/8/2008. I run windows update manually every quarter. I did not realize the updates to SQL were not happening in all of that time.

The only error I see in the event viewer during the time of the upgrade is this:

    Event Type: Error
    Event Source: MSSQLServerOLAPService
    Event Category: (289)
    Event ID: 11

    Description:

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

I don't know if it is related or not.

Also, the hotfix logs all reflect a successful update.

I'm at an impasse. I need to have SP4 installed in order to upgrade my McAfee EPO product. And I need the EPO to keep my PCs up to date and virus free. So you can see I really need some help. I am not SQL savvy so will need careful details. I am able and willing to try recommendations from you experts.

Thank you in advance for your help. I look forward to your answers.
