How do I remove the instance name from my SQL Server? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I had SQL Server 2008 installed on my workstation.  I uninstalled it and then installed SQL Server 2005.  Now when I connect to SQL Server using SQL Server Management Studio I must specify computername\SQLSERVER2005.  I want to be able to connect using only computername, as I was able to do with SQL Server 2008.

Can someone tell me how to do this?

    Gracias.

  • You can only have one Default Instance on your server,so the second install you will create a named instance. I assume that when you installed 2005 you chose named instance.

I think you will have to install another instance and make it default if you already removed the default instance from your machine.
