  • Did you try to uninstall the 2017 version first and then install the 2019 version?

  • If I wanted to go through all the hassle of detach/uninstall/install/attach, I wouldn't have tried the upgrade.  All pre-checks pass successfully. What is very irritating about this is that:

    Database Engine Services:  Failed

    SQL Client Connectivity: Failed

    Details:

    Engine:

    Action required:
Use the following information to resolve the error, and then try the setup process again.

    Feature failure reason:
An error occurred for a dependency of the feature causing the setup process for the feature to fail.

    Connectivity:

    Action required:
Use the following information to resolve the error, and then try the setup process again.

    Feature failure reason:
Setup was canceled after partial installation of the feature. There are no errors but the feature is not fully configured.

    Digging through the log file:

Error: Action "Install_sqlncli_Cpu64_Action" failed during execution.

Happy to provide the detail log file (2,896 KB) to anyone who would like to see it.

And yes, I'm ruining SSMS 18.4.  No other version on the computer.

Could you please share us the detail.txt within Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\150\Setup Bootstrap\Log?

In addition, please refer to this blog might be helpful to you.

    Hope this could help you.

  • I solved by copying the files of the sql iso to a local folder on the computer.

    :-(

  • Did the same.  Copied to local folder from DVD drive pointing to the ISO and it worked.  Now running 15.0.2000.5.

  • Hi Wayne. Given that you received:

    Exit code (Decimal):           -2068643839

and had errors in: Client Tools SDK, Client Tools Connectivity, and SQL Client Connectivity SDK, you probably ran into the issue I documented here (same post that Amelia linked to):

    Error -2068643839 / 1602 Installing msoledbsql.msi, msodbcsql.msi, and sqlncli.msi for SQL Server 2019 (CTP or RTM)

Before copying 1.4 GB to the local drive, you might want to try manually uninstalling the client connectivity components. Please review that link for the detailed instructions. Good luck.

    Take care,
    Solomon...

P.S. I believe this issue is the same as this other one, also posted on 2019-11-05:

  • For what it's worth, I ran into the same problem while attempting to upgrade an existing SQL 2017 w/CU17 instance running under Windows Server 2016. Luckily the fix/workaround was the same...uninstall ODBC, OLEDB, and SQLCLI, reboot, manually re-install all three, then reboot again before SQL 2019 was able to complete successfully.

Note, I did not pre-extract the ISO to a separate folder as others have suggested. In my case, both this failed upgrade as well as the side-by-side failure we're tracking via the other post, were launched by opening the ISO via Windows Explorer directly then running the SQL setup from there.

  • By looking at symptoms, it looks like an issue due to older version of SSMS installed. For more details you can refer this blog https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/SQL-Server-Support/SQL-Server-2019-Installation-Error-An-error-occurred-for-a/ba-p/998033

Can you please check and let us know?
