table hints shared across cluster? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Sanity check:

I guess this question only applies to active/active clustering configurations, but are table hints (such as updlock), shared across clusters?

  • Are you asking this in reference to a partitioned view across separate instances in the cluster or in another manner?  Please provide some more details as to the context for which you are asking this.

  • In the context of a pessimistic locking mechanism.

  • I understand what table hints do.  Why in your environment would they be shared across a cluster?  They are TSQL Statement specific and table specific so you can nolock a specific table in a join, but not the other tables.  Keeping this in mind, do you have distributed partitioned views with table data split across multiple instances, cross database views where the databases are on different nodes in the active/active cluster?  There has to be a specific context that makes what you are asking make sense, because just as a question it makes no sense with out the context of implementation.

  • Even in an active/active cluster, a single query only runs on a single server.  It does not load balance a query to other servers.
