Unable to install SQL Server 2005 Express: The error is (-2146885628) Cannot find object or property. Error: 29503

    Question

  • I am installing 2 instances of SQL Server 2005 Express for 2 different accounting packages on Windows XP SP3.  I have the first installed, after much use of the forums.  The version of setup.exe was 2005.90.2047.0.

I am not able to install the second, for Microsoft Office Accounting 2009, setup.exe version 2005.90.3042.0.  The error I am getting in Summary.txt is:

Error String    : The SQL Server service failed to start. For more information, see the SQL Server Books Online topics, "How to: View SQL Server 2005 Setup Log Files" and "Starting SQL Server Manually."
The error is  (-2146885628) Cannot find object or property.
    Error Number    : 29503

The errorlog file for MSSQL.2 has a lengthier description:

What do I need to do?

I have located reports of similar errors for Sql Express 2008, but not for this.  I am using a stand alone workstation for this, although I am connected to the internet via DSL.

I am also a former developer, and so my networking consists of doing what I have to do when I get there, primarily with instructions.  And they have to be step by step ones.

    Thanks.

  • Hi,

Please check the SQL Server service account.  If the SQL Server Service account isn’t set to Network Service, domain user or local system, other accounts might not have the sufficient permission on this computer to act as the service account. Try to change service account and then setup again. For more information about Startup Accounts for SQL Server Services, please see http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143504.aspx.

If there are any more questions, please let me know.
    Thanks.

  • Just to clarify these entries, at least for me.  The solution suggested to change the service account worked for me but you need to change it while running the install.  I would get the error and then cancel out and the install wouldn't finish so I did not have an installed product.   It gives you the option to Retry to start the service during the install.  Go to the Services then and fix the account and then hit Retry again and it will work or it did for me.
